Problem-Solving Ability Of Primary School Teachers Based On Polya's Method In Mataram City, Mohammad Archi Maulyda, Vivi Rachmatul Hidayati, Awal Nur Khalifatur Rosyidah, Iva Nurmawanti
PYTHAGORAS : Jurnal Matematika dan Pendidikan Matematika
Problem-solving is an important competency that must be owned by students. Problem-solving skills can facilitate students in understanding, connecting, and using mathematical concepts. Even so, mistakes in solving mathematical problems are still made by students. One reason is the lack of habituation of problem-solving in learning mathematics. Teachers who have good problem-solving skills will find it easier to teach and do an activity about problem-solving in learning mathematics. The purpose of this study is to describe the problem-solving ability of primary school teachers based on Polya's method. This research method is descriptive-qualitative. The research subjects were primary mathematics teachers who …

Current Issues in Middle Level Education
Response to Intervention (RtI) has become a common support system for students; yet, no universal RtI model exists, especially for mathematics and specifically at the middle school level. This article focuses on a specific model for delivering Tier 2 mathematics supports and services at the middle school level: math labs. Evidence–based and research–supported interventions are discussed that support the delivery of Tier 2 services within a middle school math lab RtI structure. A fictionalized vignette, drawing from multiple actual cases, is presented to highlight the use of a Tier 2 math lab within a middle school setting.
Mathematics Out Of Nothing: Talking About Powerful Mathematical Ideas With Children, Matthew Oldridge
Mathematics Out Of Nothing: Talking About Powerful Mathematical Ideas With Children, Matthew Oldridge
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Parents and educators have powerful opportunities to introduce children to big mathematical ideas, when those ideas become necessary. Children are capable and curious. They don’t need to be sheltered from big mathematical ideas. Bring out mathematical ideas when kids are ready, or when they are needed. This article describes one such instance, when I helped my six-year-old son move beyond zero in the negative direction when subtracting.
Improvirg Mathematical Ability In The United States, Emma Winegar
Improvirg Mathematical Ability In The United States, Emma Winegar
Augsburg Honors Review
The United States has a deficit in the abilities of its citizens to comprehend mathematics, as compared with similar countries. Many people experience math anxiety, and in turn hate mathematics and shy away from it at all costs. Problems with the current curriculum and teaching styles in schools limit students from being successful in mathematics. Improving mathematical ability will not only lessen anxiety, but will improve society as a whole. Mathematics is crucial to survival in modern day society. It is important that the issue of the overall low level of mathematical proficiency in the U.S. be solved. This paper …
Departmentalization For Mathematics: Is It Beneficial For Teachers, Students, And Teacher Candidates?, Melinda S. Eichhorn, Courtney Lacson
Departmentalization For Mathematics: Is It Beneficial For Teachers, Students, And Teacher Candidates?, Melinda S. Eichhorn, Courtney Lacson
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Studies have shown that both the departmentalized and self-contained models of instruction can help students achieve strong mathematics scores on standardized tests, and school administrators must consider their teachers and students when deciding on an instructional model. However, little research has considered the effect of the instructional model on initial license teacher candidates and school–university partnerships. Drawing from a Massachusetts college’s experience with practicum placements for elementary candidates pursing a generalist license (Grades 1–6), implications for teacher preparation programs are explored as more upper elementary classrooms move to a departmentalized model for mathematics.
No Bones About It: How Digital Fabrication Changes Student Perceptions Of Their Role In The Classroom, Alexandria K. Hansen, Jasmine K. Mcbeath, Danielle B. Harlow
No Bones About It: How Digital Fabrication Changes Student Perceptions Of Their Role In The Classroom, Alexandria K. Hansen, Jasmine K. Mcbeath, Danielle B. Harlow
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
This study used cultural historical activity theory to make meaning of a digital fabrication project situated in the complexity of a classroom. Using an ethnographic perspective, we observed 14 students (aged 13–14) in a middle school’s creative design and engineering class inspired by the Maker Movement. Working with the classroom teacher, a professional stuntman tasked students with fabricating a prosthetic bone for use as a movie prop using their understanding of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Teacher interviews and student focus groups revealed differences in perceptions between their science class and engineering class. Additionally, affordances and constraints of the 3D …
