Issues In Teaching Science, M. Ediger
Issues In Teaching Science, M. Ediger
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Vital issues in the science curriculum include: 1) product versus process goals; 2) inductive versus deductive learning; 3) a psychological versus a logical curriculum; and 4) subject centered versus activity centered units of study. Each student needs to achieve optimally regardless of the position(s\ taken by science teachers on any one of the above named issues.

An Experimental Introductory Course For Prospective Secondary Science Teachers, Marjorie A. Boeck
An Experimental Introductory Course For Prospective Secondary Science Teachers, Marjorie A. Boeck
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Described is a first course in education at the University of Minnesota for prospective science teachers which combines educational psychology, science content and micro-leaching experiences. The methods used and logistical problems related to such a course also are described. Students in the course kept daily logs of their reactions lo curricular materials, teaching techniques, and the micro-teaching experience to provide positive feedback to the instructors. In an examination covering the psychology aspects, all students in the combined course scored above the median for students from other sections. This experimental course has been adopted as the pattern for all science education …

Elementary Human Genetics, A Help To Teachers, Elizabeth W. Reed
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
ABSTRACT - Two pilot courses in human genetics, which were sponsored by the Minnesota Human Genetics League, are described. One was given in Minneapolis and one in Osseo, Minn. Each course consisted of ten two-hour class sessions, carried professional credits and was geared to the level of elementary and high school teachers, principals and special education personnel who made up the class membership.

Plants For Classroom Use, Elizabeth Wagner Reed
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The importance of having living plants in the classroom is emphasized. Ways of coping with environmental problems of classroom heal and dryness are outlined, including the making of terraria. Varieties of plants found suitable for the classroom and laboratory are described.
Procedure And Structure For An Instructional Laboratory Which Supplements Research, R. S. Adams Jr.
Procedure And Structure For An Instructional Laboratory Which Supplements Research, R. S. Adams Jr.
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
This paper describes the organization of a laboratory course in Soil Chemical Analysis. Students select and pursue small research problems to gain experience in the soil analyses that are discussed in lecture and required in the laboratory. Involvement of the class in an actual research problem proved challenging to both the instructor and the class. The data obtained often supplemented current departmental research. Individual projects were found to be easier to supervise than team problems. This paper reports results of a team project examining parameters of a pot experiment. Shape of the pot, methods of watering, methods of fertilizing, and …
Comparing Laboratory Instruction Methods In Biology, John C. Coulter
Comparing Laboratory Instruction Methods In Biology, John C. Coulter
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
This investigation compares achievement of ninth grade students in biology taught by inductive laboratory experiments, by deductive laboratory exercises, and by demonstration of inductive experiments. It appears that the inductive approach produced significantly greater attainment of attitudes of science. The emphasis of this on designing experiments and analyzing the data did not distract from the ability of students to learn and apply facts and principles. None of the instructional methods tested was found to be more effective with any particular ability range. Students in laboratory classes reacted more positively to their instruction than did those taught by the demonstration method.

Utilizatioon Of A Natural Area In Teaching Junior High School Biological Science, Warren V. Nelson
Utilizatioon Of A Natural Area In Teaching Junior High School Biological Science, Warren V. Nelson
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
It has long been suggested that biology, being the study of life, should place emphasis on living organisms. This should be especially true of junior high school study. For this reason the use of any available natural area should be exploited to the utmost. Since there is a natural area immediately adjacent to the school in which the author teaches, this study has been developed. Junior high school students in biological science courses spend much time learning to describe and identify organisms. This is an important part of this course and junior high school students usually enjoy this type of …
