The annual per capita consumption of wood in the United States is 65 cubic feet. This is equivalent to seven trees, ten inches in diameter and fifty feet tall for every American.

Corn To Alcohol, A. C. Haman

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The combination of critical fuel shortages and zooming oil prices have led to the possibility of converting corn to an alcohol fuel, a process that has been known for some time. The benefits offered by an alcohol-fuel industry are substantial, among a few are: the fuel source is renewable each year; domestic alcohol fuel reduces dependence on oil imports; and fuel alcohol burns clean reducing pollution. The economic impact to the state economy is obvious.

The Earth's Gravity Field, Robert S. Carmichael

Curiously, books in Iowa have more "gravity" effect in them than even TIME suspected. In fact, due to gravity effects in the State, a) the same book would weigh less in Des Moines than it would in the town of Anita, 50 miles (80 km) to the west. b) a quick way to lose weight is to travel from the north-central Iowa town of Blairsburg to the nearby town of Wellsburg.

This is the second in a series of articles on Iowa diatoms. The first article appeared in the Dec. 1978 issue of the Iowa Science Teachers Journal and dealt with the collection of diatoms in the field. After collecting diatoms in the field and labeling the collection jars properly, you must now prepare the diatoms for study in the laboratory. This article outlines the basic techniques for preparing diatoms for laboratory study.

Even the most casual survey of the uses of hydrogen peroxide would demonstrate that it is considered to be one of the safest oxidizing reagents available. Hundreds of useful commercial applications employ dilute H₂0₂ - water mixtures for bleaches, bubbling agents, mild cleansers and other gentle oxidation processes. The use of hydrogen peroxide in the teaching laboratory is recommended as far safer than the use of the pennanganates, nitrates, dichromates, chlorates and perchlorates which might otherwise be employed. Since the classic work of T.H. Huxley in 1880 on The Crayfish, decapods have been widely used in teaching elementary zoology, as well as for research along more advanced lines. Traditionally decapods have been used to demonstrate various characteristics typical of arthropods in general. Among these are the open circulatory system, ventral nervous system and segmentation.

Is There A Greater Role For Insects As Food?, G. R. Defoliart

The world food deficit has resulted in an expanded effort to find new sources of protein. With significant research efforts directed toward development of oilseed, leaf, fish and single cell concentrates, it is surprising that insects have been almost totally overlooked. They are a natural food for many kinds of animals and they are used widely as food by some human populations, especially in the tropics where they help compensate for the general deficiency in animal proteins, fats and calories. The few biochemical studies done to date indicate that insect protein is of high quality.

Certain protozoa have often been the cellular animals of choice for research and teaching in the past 100 years. In 1926, Asa Schaeffer (20) placed "the amoeba" at the pinnacle for animals that serve as primary research tools, along with the dog and the frog. Paramecium (one or more of its species) and Euglena (one or more of its species) are other protozoa (the latter, also an alga) well-known and oft-employed in both teaching and research. School science laboratories are active sites of learning. They may also be areas of potential danger from fire, explosives, caustic chemicals, poisons, noxious fumes, and projectiles. Science teachers are charged with the responsibility of establishing an environment in which students shall have relevant, practical science experiences. In addition, certain segments of the subject matter will require that students develop particular attitudes, knowledge, and skills. Inevitably students will periodically be exposed to potentially dangerous situations.

At the 30th International Science and Engineering Fair, five Iowa high school students were chosen as finalists. Kent Rhodes of Marshalltown, won for his study on the age and growth of fish; Fred Adams, of Fayette, won with a sophisticated computer simulation; Mara Hean, of Davenport, won with an experiment on noise pollution; Karen Kegaries, of Bettendorf, won with an experiment on the corrosion of auto parts; and Shelly Jones, of Muscatine, won with a study of the effects of lead ingestion in mice.
