Community colleges have a significant role in preparing students for STEM-related careers through certificates, degrees, and transfers to four-year institutions. In addition, online education is a growing mode of higher education, particularly for community college students. However, community college and online students are both at a high risk of attrition and show a lower success rate for degree completion. The purpose of this study was to identify differences in attrition and success between students in online and in-person biology courses at Virginia community colleges. The disruption to geoscience curricula due to the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the difficulty of making mineral and rock samples accessible to students online rather than through traditional lab classes. In spring 2020, our community had to adapt rapidly to remote instruction; this transition amplified existing disparities in access to geoscience education but can be a catalyst to increase accessibility and flexibility in instruction permanently. Fortunately, a rich collection of 3D mineral and rock samples is being generated by a community of digital modelers (e.g., Perkins et al., 2019).

Research in most Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines uses statistical methods. Thus as students develop into research scientists, introductory statistics serves as a gateway course. If students struggle to incorporate statistics into their knowledge base, they may be effectively kept from careers that rely on statistics. DHH students learn differently and thus may lag behind their hearing counterparts in mainstream classrooms. In part, a gap in language knowledge can impede the understanding of statistics topics. Students placed into developmental math courses experience significantly increased costs for obtaining a college degree. They are also considerably more likely to drop out of college without obtaining a degree. However, many students need developmental math if they are going to succeed in their college level math courses. As a result, it is vitally important to both students and educators concerned with student success that students are placed into the correct courses. Many studies have focused on using technological devices in elementary education; however, more research is needed on the implementation of technology to improve student learning in math. The problem addressed in this study was the lack of information about how teachers implemented and used the new math software programs, Imagine Math and Reflex in their instruction and their perspectives on differences the programs made in students' math learning.
