Student Success Of Online Vs. In-Person Biology Courses At Virginia Community Colleges, Jennifer Claire Scott
Student Success Of Online Vs. In-Person Biology Courses At Virginia Community Colleges, Jennifer Claire Scott
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Community colleges have a significant role in preparing students for STEM-related careers through certificates, degrees, and transfers to four-year institutions. In addition, online education is a growing mode of higher education, particularly for community college students. However, community college and online students are both at a high risk of attrition and show a lower success rate for degree completion. The purpose of this study was to identify differences in attrition and success between students in online and in-person biology courses at Virginia community colleges. Also, this study addressed downstream effects of online education by examining course completion of second-semester biology …
Impact Of Concept-Based Mathematics Instructional Strategies On Seventh Grade Student Achievement, Katherine Annette Lawley Ellsworth
Impact Of Concept-Based Mathematics Instructional Strategies On Seventh Grade Student Achievement, Katherine Annette Lawley Ellsworth
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In a nation with declining enrollment in college math courses, it is important to examine how mathematics is being taught in the K-12 education system and to identify best practices. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact concept-based instructional strategies has on middle school student achievement in mathematics when integrated into the traditional mathematics curriculum. Participants included 424 seventh grade students from two middle schools. Students Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Fall-to-Winter data 2018 prior to implementation was used a covariate and Fall-to-Winter data 2019 data during the implementation of concept-based instructional strategies integrated into the traditional …
The Effect Of Augmented Reality On Learning In The Mathematics Classroom, Justin Thomas Maffei
The Effect Of Augmented Reality On Learning In The Mathematics Classroom, Justin Thomas Maffei
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study examined the impact of two treatments, augmented reality or concrete materials, on the Geometry knowledge of high school students. Participating classes were chosen from two secondary schools between two rural Virginia school districts. The sampling method selected for the study employed a convenience sample. There were 87 total participants in the study. The importance of this study emerged from a lack of research relating the use of augmented reality in the classroom to its effect on student learning. The purpose of this quantitative pretest-posttest, non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental study was to evaluate the difference in achievement scores, as …
Relationships Between Placement Criteria And Students' Online Developmental Math Final Grades, Michael P. Gibson
Relationships Between Placement Criteria And Students' Online Developmental Math Final Grades, Michael P. Gibson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Students placed into developmental math courses experience significantly increased costs for obtaining a college degree. They are also considerably more likely to drop out of college without obtaining a degree. However, many students need developmental math if they are going to succeed in their college level math courses. As a result, it is vitally important to both students and educators concerned with student success that students are placed into the correct courses. Little, if any, work has done been in this area for online math courses despite the explosive growth of online college level education in the last two decades. …
The Impact Of Departmentalized And Traditional Instructional Settings On Economically Disadvantaged Fourth Grade Students' Mathematical Proficiency, Elizabeth Courtney Medlock
The Impact Of Departmentalized And Traditional Instructional Settings On Economically Disadvantaged Fourth Grade Students' Mathematical Proficiency, Elizabeth Courtney Medlock
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
All students must have opportunities to achieve high levels of mathematics learning, thus, organizational settings in the field of education should be carefully examined to determine the extent to which the instructional environment affects student achievement, growth, and application of grade level standards for students identified as economically disadvantaged. The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to investigate differences in mathematical proficiency of economically disadvantaged fourth-grade students in departmentalized versus traditional instructional settings as measured by the 2019 Maryland PARCC mathematics assessment. A cluster sample of low-income fourth-grade students from 80 public elementary schools in a large, suburban school …
