Open Letter To Science Teachers: Society In The Science Classroom, Darrel Hoff
Open Letter To Science Teachers: Society In The Science Classroom, Darrel Hoff
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In a speech given to a group of scientists and science educators last spring, Paul deHart Hurd repeated a remark made earlier by Bentley Glass that "a serious mistake has been made in the development of our national curricula in not stressing the social implications of science". Indeed this is true. You will search in vain for a reference to atomic weapons in the index of the Chem Study text. You will find no listing for hydrogen fusion weapons in the index of the PSSC text. DDT goes unlisted in the CBA index. You will find no reference to the …

The Toxic Activity Of Main Trunk Wood From Diseased Dutch Elm Trees, Lyle C. Baugess, J. Lester Dalton
The Toxic Activity Of Main Trunk Wood From Diseased Dutch Elm Trees, Lyle C. Baugess, J. Lester Dalton
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The Dutch Elm disease is caused by Ceratostomella ulmi (Schwartz) Buis (1); and, two types of elm bark beetles (9) are its vectors (3,4,9). Growth of the fungus occurs in the xylem tissue, which predominantly is concerned with conduction of water to the foliage. The spores and bud cells of C. ulmi are smaller than the elm wood vessels (1,2). C. ulmi, too, can be transmitted through root grafts.

A Consideration Of Student Understanding Of Science In Two Approaches To Bscs Biology, Harry F. Fulton
A Consideration Of Student Understanding Of Science In Two Approaches To Bscs Biology, Harry F. Fulton
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The understanding of science by students is considered by science educators to be a worthwhile goal in the teaching of science. Attempts have been made to achieve this goal in the various curricula that have been developed, and the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study is one of these curricula. Several studies have been attempted to measure the understanding of science as a student outcome in a particular course such as BSCS Biology. In most studies the Test On Understanding Science (TOUS) (1) was the most common instrument used.
Batteries And Bulbs With An Average Class Of Ninth Graders, Richard D. Mcvey
Batteries And Bulbs With An Average Class Of Ninth Graders, Richard D. Mcvey
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
During the fall semester of 1969 I had occasion to try some elementary science units with a low group of ninth graders. Of the units tried, the E.S.S. "Batteries and Bulbs" had such interesting results that it instilled in me the idea of trying the unit with my regular ninth grade class.

A Survey Of Physics Textbooks Used In Iowa Secondary Schools (Preliminary Report), Jerry Schmidt
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
On December 5, 1969, 475 questionnaires were mailed to the public high school physics teachers of Iowa concerning the basic physics textbook(s) used in the classes they teach and the extent to which students are encouraged to answer the questions contained in the textbook(s). The questionnaire was a preliminary step of a doctoral dissertation which the author is presently working on at the University of Arkansas.

Unusual Ph.D. Program Supported
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Support of an unusual graduate program in science and mathematics education is provided by a National Science Foundation grant of $29,700 awarded today to the University of California at Berkeley. Known as "SESAME" (Search for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education), the recently established program leads to a Ph.D. Its aim is to offer students the opportunity to combine advanced training in one of the natural sciences or mathematics with the pursuit of central interests in science education.

A False Sense Of "Discovery", Darrell G. Phillips
A False Sense Of "Discovery", Darrell G. Phillips
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Within the past few years the terms "discovery" and "inquiry" have come into vogue in educational circles. These terms, and those of similar connotation, are found in science curriculum programs, magazine and journal articles, and papers presented at professional meetings. It has also become apparent that certain textbook publishers are extremely sensitive to the "in" terms; one finds that such words have been carefully inserted into the introduction or preface of some outdated science textbooks.
Study Of Science Facilities
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The National Science Teachers Association is embarking on a nationwide study of facilities for the teaching of science at the secondary school level. The study will cover in-school facilities-laboratories, classrooms, and special-purpose rooms, such as greenhouses and planetariums-and facilities outside the school, such as outdoor education centers that are used for science programs.
The Oregon Science Teacher

A Description Of An Experiment Involving The Use Of A Modified Drum-Type Spherometer For Measuring The Rate Of Weathering, Darrell D. Young
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
For the teacher who is interested in teaching a unit on weathering, the cemetery may provide unlimited amounts of data. As an exercise in weathering, a measuring instrument was devised and tested by the author on tombstones in the Buffalo area. The instrument used and the results of the test are described as follows.
Science Tomorrow, Robert S. Hansen
Science Tomorrow, Robert S. Hansen
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
A few years ago the rate of production of scientists and (not too surprisingly) the rate of production of scientific articles was doubling every ten years. Really new science was coming out at a tremendous rate, generating major new areas such as solid state physics, molecular biology, radio-astronomy, and major breakthroughs such as the cracking of the genetic code, the discoveries of the transistor effect, of pulsars, and quasars, of techniques of stereospecific syntheses, of ultrasensitive methods of compound detection, identification, analysis, and structure determination, and of new fundamental particles in profusion.

Open Letter To Science Teachers: Before You Lock The Door, Delma E. Harding
Open Letter To Science Teachers: Before You Lock The Door, Delma E. Harding
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Before closing textbooks and locking classroom doors for the summer, check on several things to help make your teaching more coordinated and meaningful when fall comes. Make out a tentative schedule for next year's classes. Decide what units to teach and approximately what length each is to be. Include a list of materials you plan to use for each unit. This means chemicals, slides, demonstrations, experiments, models, audiovisual aids, tape recordings, glassware, and anything else you expect to use. Have everything ordered or available for use, so there are no disappointments or holdups when you start teaching again.
Innovation In Science Education In Australia, Richard P. Tisher
Innovation In Science Education In Australia, Richard P. Tisher
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
There are many similarities in the type of science education provided in Australia and in the United States. Teaching methods, for example, range from the traditional textbook-oriented approach to a laboratory, inquiry-oriented one. Also similar issues related to science education are being debated. Two areas of concern are the preservice education of science teachers and curriculum development. It is in this last mentioned area that the greatest innovation has occurred.
On The Trail Of The Decadent Polyglot, W. F. Hollander
On The Trail Of The Decadent Polyglot, W. F. Hollander
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
At the risk of beating a dead horse to death, I desire to add my lick. Students are not adequately trained to communicate in science, and the objective-type test is not helping. When linguistic fluency is equated with drooling in one's beard, and semantics is some sort of erotic deviation, one must not be surprised to learn that etymology is the study of incests. Most of the kids have become aware that mini means small, and that lunar means moon, and we should be grateful for such small advances, but the slippage in other areas is less cause for a …

Into The Crystal Ball For The 1970s, Joe R. Moore
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The beginning of a new decade is always an ideal time to reflect upon the past-and the future. Looking back, the decade of the sixties can be characterized as the decade of tumult, the decade of change, the decade of progress-and depending upon one's past experiences-many other adjectives will probably be equally descriptive.
