Sorting By Lc Call Number In Excel, Daniel W. Jolley May 2023

Sorting By Lc Call Number In Excel, Daniel W. Jolley

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

Sorting by Library of Congress (LC) call number in Excel is problematic because Excel does not treat LC call numbers as numbers. In practice, this means that Excel sorts LC call numbers based on each successive digit in the call number rather than the overall value of each call number. (for example, a call number beginning with PS507 would be sorted after one beginning with PS4998 in a default Excel sort). In this presentation, I demonstrate one method for accurately sorting by LC call number in Excel.

An Evaluation Of The Privacy Policies Of Library Vendors, Daniel W. Jolley May 2023

An Evaluation Of The Privacy Policies Of Library Vendors, Daniel W. Jolley

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

This project aims to evaluate the degree to which various library vendors are taking the privacy of library users into account. In 2018, the Library Freedom Project put together a Vendor Privacy Scorecard analyzing the privacy policies of twelve major vendors, but no follow-up study seems to have been conducted by the Project since then. I intend to conduct my own updated privacy policy audit of these and other significant library vendors (particularly those used by NC LIVE) to gain a better understanding of how well these vendors are accounting for and protecting the privacy of individual library users today. …

A Holistic Approach To Designing Digital Archive Collections, Natalie Edwards Bishop Jun 2021

A Holistic Approach To Designing Digital Archive Collections, Natalie Edwards Bishop

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

Transitioning analog archival collections into a digital medium requires more than a scanner and a digital platform. The balancing act between retaining provenance, addressing conservation concerns, and delivering an engaging digital experience for collection users can be daunting. When digitizing analog collections, archivists must take a holistic approach to digital collection design that includes practices that are not part of physical arrangement and conservation framework. This presentation will identify key stumbling blocks in the digitization process and present practical, no-cost solutions for tackling those hurdles, paving a smoother pathway for launching user-friendly digital collections.

Presented at the Association of Librarians …

Sleeping With The Enemy: Demystifying Faculty-Librarian Relationships, Pam Dennis, Natalie Bishop Jun 2019

Sleeping With The Enemy: Demystifying Faculty-Librarian Relationships, Pam Dennis, Natalie Bishop

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

Too often campus culture adopts an Us vs. Them attitude. In reali- ty, we are all in the fight together, dealing with a new generation of students, rising textbook costs, and budget crises that arise on a seemingly daily basis. In our presentation, we will look at collabo- rative efforts where librarians partner with faculty in financing pur- chase agreements, tenure and promotion strategies, digital reposi- tory efforts, embedding strategies, and alignment between library instruction and university initiatives such as writing intensive cours- es. Embrace the faculty. They are not the enemy – they are your comrades in arms!

How To Refine The Frbr Hierarchy: A Case Study Of Expressions Of Works By Children's Author Eileen Christelow, Frank Newton Jan 2018

How To Refine The Frbr Hierarchy: A Case Study Of Expressions Of Works By Children's Author Eileen Christelow, Frank Newton

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

It is proposed that the proper procedure for positing hierarchical levels between Work and Manifestation (Edition), in the FRBR (or WEMI) hierarchy, is to make a study of all the editions of selected works as recorded in OCLC WorldCat, and to determine inductively the most useful hierarchical levels between the top level of the Work and the lower and traditional level of the Manifestation or Edition. WorldCat was searched for all works by children's author Eileen Christelow. The 652 bib records were assigned to works, subclassified by key properties. Two intermediate levels popped out from this analysis: language and format.

Using Analytic Tools To Measure Overall Trends And Growth Patterns In Digital Commons Collections, Holly Mabry, Daniel Jolley

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

Digital Commons @ Gardner-Webb University was launched in Fall 2015 and currently has over 1300 papers including: theses and dissertations, journals in Education, Psychology, and Undergraduate Research, University Archives, and faculty scholarship activities. The repository has a small, but growing number of collections that continue to show significant year-to-year document download count increases, particularly in the nursing and education theses and dissertation collections.

Digital Commons provides a number of ways to track collection statistics and identify repository access and download trends. This presentation will look at how we used the Digital Commons Dashboard report tool and Google Analytics to identify …

Principles Of Explaining Lc Call Numbers, Frank Newton Jan 2017

Principles Of Explaining Lc Call Numbers, Frank Newton

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

Celebrate LC call numbers if you use them to organize the physical books in your library. Innovate in how you explain them to new students and new library staff. Seven principles for explaining LC call numbers are introduced. A few highlights: (a) All library staff should collaborate in explaining call numbers to new people, with each member of the staff explaining the things about call numbers which they understand. (b) All library staff's understanding of call numbers should be principle-based, not merely experiential. (c) Catalogers should play a central role in teaching about and promoting call numbers. (d) Most people …

"Amazing, Magic Searches" In Oclc Worldcat Discovery: An Update To Kornegay, Buchanan, And Morgan 2005, Frank Newton Jan 2017

"Amazing, Magic Searches" In Oclc Worldcat Discovery: An Update To Kornegay, Buchanan, And Morgan 2005, Frank Newton

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

In their classic article, "Amazing, Magic Searches!" (Library Journal, Nov. 1st 2005, pp. 44-46) Kornegay, Buchanan, & Morgan show how subdivisions (phrases authorized by LC to be tacked on to subject headings) can be used to advantage in keyword searching in online library catalogs. Their first example: college sports and economic aspects. I work at a library which has replaced its free-standing online library catalog with OCLC Discovery Service -- a window into WorldCat which lets you limit your searches to materials in your library. Volunteer State librarians will be pleased to discover that if one reruns KB&M's sample searches …

The Embedded Librarian As Graduate Coach, Pamela Dennis Jan 2016

The Embedded Librarian As Graduate Coach, Pamela Dennis

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

In a time when more classes are being offered online and in-person reference desk questions are dwindling, it is even more crucial that librarians to seek out students where they are. One way of doing that is by befriending teaching faculty in discipline areas. Whether at the freshman or doctoral level, literature indicates that students prefer one-on-one interaction with librarians. But librarians undersell themselves and find themselves in a world of anonymity. It’s hard to be valued when you are invisible. By collaborating with the faculty, the librarian has the opportunity of embedding in online classes, co-instructing, receiving invitations to …

Shooting Down The Gold Star: Using The Power Of Feedback And Assessment To Draw Students Through The Threshold, Natalie Bishop, Holly Mabry Jan 2016

Shooting Down The Gold Star: Using The Power Of Feedback And Assessment To Draw Students Through The Threshold, Natalie Bishop, Holly Mabry

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

The ACRL Framework presents librarians with the opportunity to develop a deeper, more effective learning environment that encourages students to go beyond simply achieving the gold star. Measuring students’ mastery of threshold concepts for information literacy instruction presents a challenge to our assessment and accreditation-driven culture. Learn how librarians can use targeted student learning outcomes to develop innovative assessment initiatives to overcome the “making the grade” mindset, which can be an obstacle for both one-shot and for-credit information literacy instruction.

In this workshop, presenters will provide a brief overview of their institution’s for-credit research skills course, identify some of the …

Information Creation As A Process: Putting Together The Pieces Through Disparate Resources, Pamela Dennis Jan 2016

Information Creation As A Process: Putting Together The Pieces Through Disparate Resources, Pamela Dennis

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

With the advent of digitized sources, researchers have at their fingertips a fountain of information of all varieties. While some resources may be considered non-scholarly, they, in fact, are parts of the puzzle that must not be overlooked. Through threshold concepts, we can now teach researchers to find disparate resources that help complete that puzzle.

Transforming Instructional Design: Using Professional Learning Communities (Plcs) To Invoke Change And To Incorporate The Framework Into Instructional Practice, Natalie Bishop, Pamela Dennis Jan 2016

Transforming Instructional Design: Using Professional Learning Communities (Plcs) To Invoke Change And To Incorporate The Framework Into Instructional Practice, Natalie Bishop, Pamela Dennis

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

When challenged with migrating to LibGuides 2.0, we sought to implement an easily accessible tool that would be useful to our students. With the recent launching of Framework threshold concepts by ACRL, we saw the opportunity to combine LibGuides migration with Framework introduction to improve our existing instructional design practices. In order to attain buy-in by our library faculty, we chose to create a Professional Learning Community (PLC), allowing us to take agency for our own professional development/learning. PLCs function as a collaborative effort to improve student learning through action research and job-embedded learning (DuFour, et al., 2006). Recognizing that …
