Modern education technology tools and learning systems provide the means for faculty to develop courses that offer connected and engaging learning opportunities. However, many courses, particularly those in the sciences and engineering disciplines, are not often designed to encourage collaboration, cooperation and teamwork.
Given the presence of a global and interconnected economy, it is critical for students to interact with classmates who hold diverse perspectives, experiences and opinions. When challenged with migrating to LibGuides 2.0, we sought to implement an easily accessible tool that would be useful to our students. With the recent launching of Framework threshold concepts by ACRL, we saw the opportunity to combine LibGuides migration with Framework introduction to improve our existing instructional design practices. In order to attain buy-in by our library faculty, we chose to create a Professional Learning Community (PLC), allowing us to take agency for our own professional development/learning. Moving Students To The Center Through Collaborative Documents In The Classroom, Maura A. Smale, Stephen Francoeur

Collaborative document creation allows groups of people to create and edit text in a shared space, and educators across all subject areas have embraced these tools in their classes. Library instructors are no exception—the authors have used collaborative documents with students in multiple instructional settings. We believe that collaborative documents can embody critical pedagogy in the library classroom. Creating and editing collaborative documents can acknowledge students’ prior experiences with research and the library and de-center the library instructor as the sole research expert in the room.
