2024 Celebration of Community Engagement
Background: Andrews University’s administration acknowledges the university’s obligation to seek higher levels of community engagement. The relatively recent adoption of the motto—Seek knowledge, Affirm faith, Change the world—speaks to the intent of the organization to become an agent for positive change. Consequently, educators are encouraged to understand and support community engagement efforts to mold students into World Changers. It is with this backdrop that Andrews University embarked on a pilot project with the School of Nursing to see the effect of empathy development on a service-learning program at Benton Harbor High School.
Aim of Project: To determine the level of …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Background: The various pressures on nurses in their practice environment, given the complexity of care, have exposed the confusion around the role definition and level of professional identity (PI) of future nurses. To support them in their practice, it is important throughout their education to know their commitment, representations, and sense of identity with respect to their future profession. To our knowledge, there is no measurement tool in the literature that can be used to measure the PI of nursing students throughout their education, given its complex multidimensional nature.
Objective: Based on a framework that takes into account …

Aurora Family Medicine Residents
Purpose: Home visits, once a popular but now uncommon form of health care delivery, are on the rise. Few studies have focused on the value the experience brings to resident physicians and their patients.
Methods: A 6-month pilot was conducted with 11 residents who participated in 32 home visits with 11 patients. Patient and resident experiences were captured through a survey following the home visits.
Results: In all, 100% of patients and a majority of residents were very interested in being a part of and incorporating future home visits, respectively. Every patient in the survey said that the visits resulted …

Applying The Plan-Do-Study-Act (Pdsa) Approach To Community Health Worker Job Satisfaction: Local And Global Perspectives, Wendy R. Thal, Rosalinda Jimenez
Journal of Refugee & Global Health
Community Health Workers (CHW) have been a continuing presence in the world health care arena for several decades. While the work they do is diverse, all abide by local social and cultural “norms” and are stakeholders within the population they serve. [1] While much literature is available on the importance of community health workers in the provision of care in regions with limited access to health care, there is little known on what inspires someone to engage in the role. The World Health Organization purports that building value for these lay health care providers within their community via training, support, …

Interdisciplinary Lens On Indigenous Health Iniquities: Planning, Nursing, Anthropology, Geography, Education, Chantal Francouer, Alana Kehoe, Ivy Tran, Steven Vanloffeld, Lillian Woroniuk, Jacob Renaud
2019 Cohort
Indigenous peoples experience poorer health outcomes on almost every measure of health and wellbeing, when compared to the rest of Canada. For decades researchers have been working independently on addressing health inequalities, yet little progress has been made on closing the gap. This Discipline-specific way of thinking is too narrow and neglects indigenous ideologies of holistic approaches to health. An interdisciplinary approach to indigenous health research provides a more collaborative and integrated opportunity to address the multidimensional aspects of health. This paper has the goals to contribute to the limited research on interdisciplinary indigenous health research.

A Rural Telehealth Objective Structured Clinical Examination, Devon Schlottach
A Rural Telehealth Objective Structured Clinical Examination, Devon Schlottach
Dissertations
Problem Rural healthcare consumers experience increased health disparities, especially when accessing health care. The use of telehealth to improve access has become an essential competency for nurse practitioner (NP) students. This study evaluated NP students’ confidence and competence of rural social determinants of health (rSDOH) before and after a telehealth simulation.
Methods A descriptive, cohort design was used to review NP students’ pre- and post-surveys, written case studies, and a video-recorded telehealth OSCE for a patient living in a rural area.
Results Student self-rated knowledge of rural health care did not improve despite didactic learning and simulation (z = …
Beyond The Transcript: A Narrative Analysis Of Students' Experiences With Academic Dismissal In A Baccalaureate Nursing Program, Angela Edwards Capello
Beyond The Transcript: A Narrative Analysis Of Students' Experiences With Academic Dismissal In A Baccalaureate Nursing Program, Angela Edwards Capello
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Re-defining different is the first step in addressing inequity in nursing education and the disparities that result in a high incidence of academic dismissal in baccalaureate nursing programs. What are the students' differences that contribute to one student’s ease of progression through a baccalaureate nursing program and those who struggle from the first semester?
This study provides a private look into the experiences of nine baccalaureate nursing students who were academically dismissed from their nursing program. Each story chronological from the time they decided to pursue nursing to their experiences during nursing school and to their lives after dismissal. …

Comprehensive Trauma-Informed Care For The Whole Community: The Whole Child Initiative Model, Gregory J. Benner Ph.D.
Comprehensive Trauma-Informed Care For The Whole Community: The Whole Child Initiative Model, Gregory J. Benner Ph.D.
Educational Considerations
The Whole Child Initiative (WCI) is a decade-long blueprint for sustainable and comprehensive community-wide change. To be successful, community-wide sustainable change must embrace a common vision, language, and common experiences to bridge the contrasting community structures, environments, and scopes of work. The Whole Child Initiative uses data, shared goals, and aligned supports ensure that every youth is safe, supported, engaged, healthy, and challenged in the community-at-large. We make the case that a population health or public health approach is needed to sustainable change in communities and the WCI model is described. Among other important outcomes, researchers have found social and …
