College Of Engineering Senior Design Competition Fall 2007, University Of Nevada, Las Vegas Dec 2007

College Of Engineering Senior Design Competition Fall 2007, University Of Nevada, Las Vegas

Fred and Harriet Cox Senior Design Competition Projects

Part of every UNLV engineering student’s academic experience, the senior design project stimulates engineering innovation and entrepreneurship. Each student in their senior year chooses, plans, designs, and prototypes a product in this required element of the curriculum. A capstone to the student’s educational career, the senior design project encourages the student to use everything learned in the engineering program to create a practical, real world solution to an engineering challenge.

The senior design competition helps to focus the senior students in increasing the quality and potential for commercial application for their design projects. Judges from local industry evaluate the projects …

What Allows Teachers To Extend Student Thinking During Whole-Group Discussions, Nesrin Cengiz Dec 2007

What Allows Teachers To Extend Student Thinking During Whole-Group Discussions, Nesrin Cengiz

Dissertations

Research indicates that extending students' mathematical thinking during whole-group discussions is challenging, even for the most experienced teachers. That is, it is challenging for teachers to help students move beyond their initial mathematical observations and solutions during whole-group discussions. To better understand this phenomena, the teaching of six experienced elementary school teachers, who had been teaching aStandards-based curriculum for several years and had participated in a multi-year professional development project focused on that curriculum, is explored in this study. In particular, two issues are addressed: what it looks like to extend student thinking during whole-group discussions and how …

Teaching Time Savers: The Exam Practically Wrote Itself!, Michael E. Orrison Jr. Dec 2007

Teaching Time Savers: The Exam Practically Wrote Itself!, Michael E. Orrison Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

When I first started teaching, creating an exam for my upper division courses was a genuinely exciting process. The material felt fresh and relatively unexplored (at least by me), and I remember often feeling pleasantly overwhelmed with what seemed like a vast supply of intriguing and engrossing exam-ready problems. Crafting the perfect exam, one that was noticeably inviting, exceedingly fair, and unavoidably illuminating, was a real joy.

Learner-Centered Assignments In Computer Literacy, Martha E. Myers, Meg C. Murray, Mario Guimaraes, Debra B. Geist Dec 2007

Learner-Centered Assignments In Computer Literacy, Martha E. Myers, Meg C. Murray, Mario Guimaraes, Debra B. Geist

Faculty and Research Publications

Literacy is a concept that is understood to be the identifier of an educated populace. In today's world, literacy includes computer literacy, as well as language and quantitative literacy. This paper describes exercises developed to improve first year students' computer literacy through more learner-centered engagement. Exercises are designed to support learner-centered goals of independent and responsible learners, appropriate breadth and depth of content, teacher as facilitator, and assessment woven into learning. Exercise topics include purchase of a personal computer, basic logic via spreadsheets, an annotated bibliography built with electronic resources, and an integrated assignment customized by and for each student.

Promoting Mathematical Communication And Community Via Blackboard, Kris H. Green, Erica L. Johnson Oct 2007

Promoting Mathematical Communication And Community Via Blackboard, Kris H. Green, Erica L. Johnson

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Faculty/Staff Publications

Major changes in mathematics pedagogy include writing as pedagogy and the role of community in learning. The classroom community is naturally extended by the use of online discussion boards. In this paper several models for student use of online discussion boards that have been successfully used to promote mathematical discourse are presented. Structured and unstructured examples that are easily adaptable and transportable to a variety of mathematics classroom settings are offered. These assignments facilitate student engagement and interaction outside of the classroom. Assessment, utility, and transferability are offered. Although the authors use the discussion boards provided by Blackboard, this particular …

Torsional Waveguide Density Sensor, Radek Glaser Aug 2007

Torsional Waveguide Density Sensor, Radek Glaser

Radek Glaser

As a part of National Science Foundation-Research for Undergraduates program, a torsional wave guide density sensor has been investigated in the Laboratory of Surface Science and Technology at the University Of Maine. This simple design uses torsional piezo-electric transducers to generate torsional mode in a long circular rod.
The non-circular portion of the wave guide allows for the measurement of different properties of fluids. Theory is presented from energy balance perspective and from the acoustic wave propagation approach. A series of experiments have been conducted with variety of liquids and gases. Several relationships have been verified and also new have …

Financial Portfolio Strategy: Application To College Of Southwest, Grace S. Thomson Aug 2007

Financial Portfolio Strategy: Application To College Of Southwest, Grace S. Thomson

Dr. Grace S. Thomson

Financial Portfolio Strategy Creating value in the organization is the cornerstone of business activity. Value-creation is a concept that has evolved for the past fifty years, stimulating the generation of theories, techniques, models and institutions (Slater and Zwirlein, 1996). Financial markets have developed in response to the dynamic corporate activity, providing different options of financing and investment. Financial decision-making at the executive level becomes critical in the creation of wealth in the organization, and the financial strategies designed by the Top Management Team (TMT) are expected to seek beyond profit maximization (Lankau et al, 2007; Myers, 2001). However, there are …

A New Framework For Grading, Kris H. Green, W. Allen Emerson Aug 2007

A New Framework For Grading, Kris H. Green, W. Allen Emerson

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Faculty/Staff Publications

Grading is one of the least liked, least understood and least considered aspects of teaching. After years of work, we have developed a grading system that is quite different from traditional and reformed approaches to grading and which meaningfully incorporates and integrates the collection of evidence, the evaluation of evidence, and the reporting of judgments about that evidence. This system satisfies the requirements of good grading system and answers many of the problems faced by more traditional methods by substantially changing the way in which grade information is aggregated, resulting in a final course grade that aligns qualitative evaluation with …

Delivery Of Itv Chemistry Classes, David Martin Aug 2007

Delivery Of Itv Chemistry Classes, David Martin

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Western Kentucky University (WKU) offered a course entitled Biochemistry for the Health Sciences in the spring semester of 2007. The course was taught in Interactive Television (ITV) format, and was the first time a class had been taught in the format enabling two-way communication by the Chemistry Department. One section was present in an ITV broadcast classroom on the main campus in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Another section received the broadcast on the campus of Western Kentucky University-Owensboro (WKU-O), at Owensboro Community and Technical College (OCTC), located in Owensboro, Kentucky. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the delivery of …
