Calculus-Based Physics Exploratory Study: Summary Report, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy Dec 1994

Calculus-Based Physics Exploratory Study: Summary Report, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Documents

During the 1992-1993 academic year a number of elements (national level surveys and research reports, IMSA’s professional development focus; a climate of reflective inquiry) focused attention on the participation and achievement of females in mathematics and science at a national level and, specifically, the participation and achievement of females in mathematics and science at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. These elements served as the catalyst for the calculus-based physics exploratory study.

Teaching Parallel Computing To Freshmen, Donald Johnson, David Kotz, Fillia Makedon Jun 1994

Teaching Parallel Computing To Freshmen, Donald Johnson, David Kotz, Fillia Makedon

Dartmouth Scholarship

Parallelism is the future of computing and computer science and should therefore be at the heart of the CS curriculum. Instead of continuing along the evolutionary path by introducing parallel computation “top down” (first in special junior-senior level courses), we are taking a radical approach and introducing parallelism at the earliest possible stages of instruction. Specifically, we are developing a completely new freshman-level course on data structures that integrates parallel computation naturally, and retains the emphasis on laboratory instruction. This will help to steer our curriculum as expeditiously as possible toward parallel computing.

Our approach is novel in three distinct …

Effect Of Applied Potential Upon The In Situ Structure Of Self-Assembled Monolayers On Gold Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Marilyn Gatin May 1994

Effect Of Applied Potential Upon The In Situ Structure Of Self-Assembled Monolayers On Gold Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Marilyn Gatin

Mark R. Anderson

Polarization modulation Fourier transform infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-FTIRRAS) has been utilized to study the in situ structure of octadecanethiol when adsorbed to gold electrode surfaces and with the application of potential to the substrate. It is found that applied potential has little effect upon the spectrum of the monolayer in the presence of D2O solutions containing 0.10 M NaClO4. The presence of an acetonitrile solution contacting the monolayer leads to small changes in the infrared spectrum relative to that seen in D2O solutions, suggestive of some small disordering of the monolayer caused by the presence of the acetonitrile. With …

Center for Grassland Studies: Newsletters

Its my pleasure, on behalf of the Grassland Studies Task Force, to forward a proposal for a Center for Grassland Studies for your consideration. The Task Force is extremely pleased with the overwhelming support from a broad base of input. The Task Force has made a major effort through internal and external listening sessions to insure that there was support and in doing so develop a coalition of partners across the University of Nebraska System, state colleges, community colleges, industry, state and federal agencies, public groups, private non-profit organizations and other educational institutions in the region.

Nebraska has a rich …
