Approaches To Broadening Participation With Ap Computer Science Principles, Audrey Le Meur
Approaches To Broadening Participation With Ap Computer Science Principles, Audrey Le Meur
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
The Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) course framework was created with the intention of broadening participation in computing. Research has produced mixed results on whether or not the framework succeeds in that goal. Given that teachers have significant freedom in how they choose to teach the AP CSP content, students can have a variety of experiences that may or may not impact their continued participation in CS. In this paper, I compare four different approaches to the AP CSP framework by examining their impact on AP exam scores, self-efficacy and confidence, belongingness and identity, and persistence and interest, …

St. Olaf College at Northfield, Minnesota, has an Interactive Statistical Analysis System for classroom research usage. SODAS (St. Olaf Data Analysis System) operates on a Minicomputer Time Sharing System (DEC PDP / 1140 has 15 terminals, 64K of core, and 3 disks). SODAS is used extensively by students for study of statistics, course projects, and research. In addition, it is used for faculty research . This system has increased student interest by involving them in realistic problems. In addition, student sophistication in problem solving has increased. The paper discusses the system design, the philosophy of interactive computing, and the pedagogical …
Procedure And Structure For An Instructional Laboratory Which Supplements Research, R. S. Adams Jr.
Procedure And Structure For An Instructional Laboratory Which Supplements Research, R. S. Adams Jr.
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
This paper describes the organization of a laboratory course in Soil Chemical Analysis. Students select and pursue small research problems to gain experience in the soil analyses that are discussed in lecture and required in the laboratory. Involvement of the class in an actual research problem proved challenging to both the instructor and the class. The data obtained often supplemented current departmental research. Individual projects were found to be easier to supervise than team problems. This paper reports results of a team project examining parameters of a pot experiment. Shape of the pot, methods of watering, methods of fertilizing, and …
