A Historical Narrative On The Formative Years And Organizational Culture Of Ave Maria University: 2003 To 2011, Patricia Lourdes Moran
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
In this study, I focused on the history of Ave Maria University during its formative years in Florida from 2003 to 2011 to answer the research question: How did a new, conservative Catholic university emerge in the United States at the beginning of the 21st century? Understanding the history and culture of Ave Maria informs how the institution came about and is still operational today, even when other small institutions are closing their doors. The study utilized a historical narrative approach to uncover and document Ave Maria’s early history, the physical transition of moving campus locations twice, the accreditation process, …

W&M Libraries Publications
Have you ever thought, “If I had some uninterrupted time to write, I could get so much done!”?
At William & Mary Libraries, we often feel this way, and we hear from our teaching faculty colleagues that they feel the same. But can this common challenge present a unique opportunity? Can we, as a library, fill this need, and in turn, accomplish our goals of building relationships and connections with faculty? We determined that we can. As we consider time-intensive library events, partnerships, and outreach, we have learned that focusing on high-impact relationship-building opportunities is the best way …

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
In 2003, the Virginia Department of Education authorized a committee of 11 teachers to write a report detailing Virginia's public education history. The committee drafted a document that provided a chronological account of the major developments in public education in Virginia from 1607 to 2003. The document provided minimal coverage of the history of Virginia's African American population, specifically during the Antebellum (1830s-1860s) and Reconstruction (1865-1871) eras. The history of public education for Virginia's African American population, 1865-1870, was completely omitted from the document. The post-Civil-War era was a critical time period in both United States and Virginia educational history …

The Elephant In The Room: Deconstructing The Place Of Conservatives In The Student Affairs Profession, Jodi Fisler
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The student affairs profession places considerable emphasis on the values of diversity, inclusiveness, and social justice as part of its mission to foster the holistic development of college students. Many vocal conservative critics point to these values as evidence of the liberal worldview that they claim dominates the higher education landscape. This critical, phenomenological study was designed around the premise that higher education, and, specifically, student affairs, is characterized by a liberal ideology that privileges those in the profession who identify as liberal. The study explored the perceptions and experiences of 12 self-identified conservative student affairs professionals in order to …

On May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court handed down one of its most important decisions in the twentieth century. Brown v. Board of Education ordered twenty-one U.S. states, including Virginia, to end racial segregation in their public schools.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), a nationally-known African American civil rights organization, had led the legal campaign to bring about the Brown decision. After its victory, the organization focused on how to bring about the implementation of the decision in the South in order to effectuate school desegregation. In the later 1950s, the NAACP filed …

"African American parental involvement in education is inextricably linked with improving the political and economic standing of their children. In The Education of Blacks in the South, 1860-1935, James Anderson (1988} chronicles the efforts of ex-slaves to "establish schools for their own children" (p. 15). According to Anderson {1988), the Negroes, labors were grounded in the "belief that education could help raise freed people to an appreciation of their historic responsibility to develop a better society and that any significant reorganization of the southern political economy was indissolubly linked to their education in the principles, duties, and obligations appropriate to …

This study examines the progressive leadership of President J. A. C. Chandler in hiring the first women faculty at the College of William and Mary and explains the relationship between his presidency and his twenty-year career in education prior to 1919. During the early heyday of hiring women faculty in higher education, Chandler employed women educators at levels equal to national rates and surpassing regional standards. He did so in conjunction with his efforts to establish full coeducation at William and Mary. Chandler led a crusade to transform the College from a tiny, mostly male college into a vibrant coeducational …

A Study Exploring The Educational Needs Of African-American Pastors' Wives Within Baptist Congregations, Jocelyn Georgette Henry-Whitehead
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
For many years, the role of the pastor's wife has been an emerging role in American religious history (Sweet, 1983). While on their journey in building and nurturing their relationship with God, supporting their husbands, families, congregations, and communities, pastors' wives have experienced joys and blessings as well as challenges and issues. A tremendous joy for some pastors' wives has been the privilege, the opportunity, and the honor to serve, minister to, assist and care for others. However, one major challenge for many pastors' wives has been preparedness, or the lack of preparedness, knowledge, and instruction (Obleton, 1996). Wives of …
