The Naval Training System (NTS) is the authority for training across the Navy, responsible for trainees until the completion of their on-the-job training (OJT) or ‘apprenticeship’ at sea. An emerging challenge are the rising rates of trainee attrition during OJT. Surveys indicate that trainees are motivated to go to sea, ready to apply their knowledge and skills (NTS, 2016, 2018); however, an increasing number of trainees are opting not to complete their OJT (MP, 2017). The impacts of the COVID-19 global pandemic on higher education could be seen in education in early 2020. Significant labour market disruptions places students among the group experiencing the heaviest burden from layoffs and work insecurity during this time. Higher education institutions also face financial uncertainty, bracing for shifts in enrolment and tuition revenue, particularly related to international student cohorts. The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on student employability are on the radar of policymakers, university faculty and administrators, employers, and students alike.

This paper provides a case study of two female-only entrepreneurship education programs designed by faculty from Brescia University College, Canada’s only women’s university, located in London, Ontario, Canada. The programs were designed to address the substantial gender gap found in women’s participation in entrepreneurial activities by inspiring, educating, and exposing program participants to entrepreneurial endeavours. One program was a one-day conference and the other was a one-week boot camp. The study was designed to better understand how to strengthen the female entrepreneurial pipeline by measuring changes in entrepreneurial knowledge, entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE), and entrepreneurial intentions (EI). Roshana Ghaedi reports on her participation in the Arete project on an isolated North Carolinian farm in the summer of 2019, which she counted as experiential-learning requirement in the School for Advanced Studies in the Arts & Humanities (SASAH). She explains Arete’s founding pillars and approach to education and details the work and self-reflection she undertook, the concept of self-governance, and the process of developing her presentation on her experience.
