Many counselor education programs are now offered online due to convenience and accessibility. The pandemic has forced educators to learn how to connect with students on an online platform genuinely. Some online college students report feeling disconnected, lonely, and isolated. However, online educators can reach these students through creative mediums, which helps them feel more engaged and increases their learning experience. This conference proceeding will discuss the importance of connection for students, how to creatively promote communication and connection with students, technology platforms, and ways to safeguard ethics during supervision, training, and teaching.

The purpose of this non-experimental, quantitative survey study was to determine how middle school students in fully online language arts courses perceived their teachers to be present and what methods of communication with the teacher middle school students desired. The purposive sample was composed of 100 sixth and seventh grade language arts students from a large virtual school in the southeastern United States. Student responses were overwhelmingly skewed, and results from the survey indicated a statistically significant finding. Successful One-to-One Computing Initiative implementation requires educators to communicate and collaborate effectively with everyone in the learning community. However, other factors such as teacher’s professional development, student’s perception, and parent’s perception often affect the implementation of the One-to-One Computing Initiative. School districts, which serve low-income areas in Mississippi, have difficulties ensuring students and communities have access to the information technology they need to participate outside the school setting. The concept is often called digital equity.
