As incidents of school violence have hit the news media, school safety is of increasing interest to scholars and practitioners. Unfortunately, schools are ill-equipped to prevent violence and intervene when it occurs. This presentation will discuss how research can inform school readiness and public policy to prevent and intervene in violence.

Comparison Of Alexithymia And Burnout Amid Perceived Stress Levels Of Nursing Students, Kamela Harmon
Comparison Of Alexithymia And Burnout Amid Perceived Stress Levels Of Nursing Students, Kamela Harmon
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Graduate level nursing students are exposed to overload and exhaustion due to academic and professional demands, increasing exposure to stressors resulting in elevated levels of perceived stress, burnout, and alexithymia. This quantitative research, utilizing an online methodology at a midwestern university, explored the prevalence of perceived stress, compassion satisfaction (CS), compassion fatigue (CF), burnout, and alexithymia among master’s level nursing students. The descriptive analysis utilized the Pearson correlation coefficient (Pearson r) by use of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL), and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). The researcher discovered statistically significant negative correlations …

How I Developed As A Qualitative Researcher: A Covid-19 Induced Dissertation Research Shift, Jareau Almeyda
The Qualitative Report Conference
Prior to the global COVID-19 pandemic, my dissertation study aimed to explore how exposure to information systems project management impacts perceptions of computing careers among high school female participants. However, the emergence of the COVID-19 global pandemic and the closure of schools forced the premature end of the study–resulting in the design of a new study. The new study aimed to understand the experiences of teachers and the readiness and sustainability concerns they had after being abruptly transitioned from an in-person teaching environment to a fully online teaching environment. The qualitative data, collected from a ten-item, open-ended questionnaire, underwent a …

Librarian At The Colloquium: Delivering Unique Library Content For Phd Students, Susan Franzen
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
PhD students have unique needs and require different resources and services from the library than undergraduates, which is especially true of professionals in a nursing program. As clinicians, many do not have experience with the research and writing intensive requirements of a doctoral degree. The majority have not taken classes for years, and their master’s degrees were more hands-on, clinically-based. They often do not feel confident in their ability to search the literature, read closely, or write expansively. A unique avenue through which to meet their needs and share library resources is a PhD colloquium course.
Students take the colloquium …

Online Versus Traditional End-Of-Life Care Education In Nursing: An Integrative Literature Review, Emily Wolff
Online Versus Traditional End-Of-Life Care Education In Nursing: An Integrative Literature Review, Emily Wolff
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: Professional nurses spend more time with patients who are dying than any other health care professional. However, studies show that nurses feel unprepared, or unequipped, to provide adequate end-of-life (EOL) care to these patients, which has directed many organizations to dedicate resources to the development of effective EOL care education programs. The most effective and efficient method for EOL care education delivery is yet to be determined.
Objectives: The purpose of this integrative literature review is to examine the existing research regarding the efficacies of online and traditional EOL care education methods for professional nurses because the reported …

Raise Your Cards - A Look At Plickers In An Adult Learning Environment, Megan Taylor
SIDLIT Conference
At SIDLIT 2015, the session on the free Plickers polling system dazzled many of us. Members of the National Weather Service Training Center immediately began integrating this tool into their classes. In this session, we will review our successful integration of Plickers. We will also examine the results of using this technique with adult learners with a predominately introverted, scientific mindset. This session will also include information about what has and has not worked. Are you unfamiliar with Plickers? No worries, we will do a quick overview of this tool at the beginning of the presentation.

Are your students having difficulty with research topics? How about proper source citations in their research papers? Wouldn’t it be nice to have your own, personal librarian to help with these issues? Emporia State University’s William Allen White Library staff has partnered with Information Technology/Learning Technologies to create the Embedded Librarian program. A specific role was developed for the LMS to allow the embedded librarian to create content, create and manage discussion topics and to communicate directly with the students in the course. The possibilities available to an instructional designer or online instructor are nearly infinite. For this reason, even the most experienced designers may be unaware of different tools and techniques available to them. In this roundtable session, participants will discuss current issues facing online education, such as active learning and diversifying materials, and share ideas of what is being done at your school and how to leverage techniques and tools to solve common problems. Other topics that participants are interested in discussing will be welcomed if time permits.

#Dearnextpresident: Passionate Student Engagement, Terri Summey
SIDLIT Conference
Engaging students in the educational process is something that educators struggle to achieve. To increase student engagement in a course long research project, this faculty member decided to build on causes that students are passionate about. Using a hashtag / video campaign sponsored by Fusion.net, #DearNextPresident, students identified and researched causes that they want the next President to focus on. At the end of the semester, students’ findings were presented in a variety of formats, including a video asking the next President to support their cause and presenting facts about the issue. Because the research focused on a topic that …

Save The Day With Voicethread!, April Robbs
SIDLIT Conference
VoiceThread comes to the rescue to promote speaking, listening and learning in asynchronous settings and is an especially powerful tool in the Human Services and Communication online classes at Ottawa University. Its web-based platform can be used as a stand-alone tool, or can integrate many of the major LMS systems. Participants can interact with multimedia presentations by recording audio (microphone or from a phone line) comments, video (webcam) comments, and by uploading an audio file from their device. This session will explore how Ottawa University uses class debates, student presentations, persuasive appeals, and class discussions to engage students.

AyidStudents are demanding the use of online options to receive information about courses, complete assignments, and participate in class discussions. This form of education requires different knowledge, skills, and attitudes from course instructors. The growth of these programs has inspired change in how these types of courses and programs are designed and delivered to meet quality standards. This presentation will identify ways to both meet quality standards and provide improved student experiences through the use of standardized course design features in learning management systems.

Active Learning is a key component when attempting to increase online retention. The overwhelming number of techniques can make instructors wish for super powers to determine which to implement in their courses. Initial research suggests reflection, individualized learning, and social media as important places to start. This session will provide 30 techniques that can be implemented online or onsite, offer some real-life implementations and success, and encourage audience participation for additional discussion. The focus will not be on new technologies, but rather how to incorporate these methods using basic tools found in most LMSs.
