Senior students are held accountable for learning outcomes in a junior level informatics course. Design skills were applied in the creation of websites used for classroom presentations on select leadership topics. These websites were used as educational tools in the practice setting. Two websites will be featured.

How do faculty meet the “net generation” learning needs? The challenge of engaging students was accomplished in this senior leadership course using a variety of strategies. Course requirements included a classroom presentation, multimedia applications, and a quality improvement project completed in a 90 hour practicum. Student-developed websites will be featured and evaluated for design, flow, evidence-based information, credibility, currency, and relevancy to practice. Learning outcomes will be assessed using undergraduate curriculum foundations. Participants will be invited to share strategies that were successful for them in engaging the net generation in meaningful coursework.

Background Because of migration patterns to the United States over the past 250 years, there has always been cultural and religious diversity. Healthcare providers must have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to care for patients whose beliefs differ from their own, particularly during critical life events such as birth or death. An end of life care simulation experience for BSN students involving standardized patients (SPs) representing 3 well known religious groups was implemented. Method Fifty-four students participated in this quasi-experimental study comparing a treatment group (n=30) that experienced a simulation activity with a control group (n=24). Three nurse educators, who met at the American Nurses Association Nursing Care in Life, Death, and Disaster Conference, collaborated on a multimedia conferencing project to teach nursing students about disaster response. This case study examines two outcomes of this project. The project provided students in a disaster nursing course in Indiana an opportunity to meet faculty who helped establish and maintain a special needs shelter in Texas following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It also demonstrated, through the use of technology, the ability of nurse faculty to share their expertise with colleagues and students residing in different geographical locations.

Interactive Learning Environment: Engaging Students Using Clickers, Carol Sternberger

Educators continue to search for effective methods that will engage students in their learning. This article presents the integration of clickers while using the constructivist approach to foster critical thinking wile engaging learners in a large classroom setting. A 22-item survey was used to measure the perceived value by students to the use of clickers in engaging them in the learning process and fostering critical thinking. Clickers, also known as personal response systems, created an interactive environment, moving students beyond simple recall to application, analysis, and construction of knowledge.

The researchers framed this program evaluation project as an investigation of the influences on teaching practices of a teaching center program participants and non-participants. Changes in teaching practices and the motivations for these changes of fifteen randomly chosen faculty were studied. Session participants will develop and analyze brief case studies using abbreviated data sets and three of the methods that were used in the study. Through hands on analysis of data, session participants will enhance their ability to evaluate the conclusions drawn by the researchers and become familiar with useful analytical frameworks that they can use in their own research. …

Background Baccalaureate nursing students rarely have the opportunity to practice emergency response skills. Simulation gives students the ability to practice emergency procedures in an environment that is safe. Method Nursing students’ skills accuracy and confidence ratings were assessed before and after an instructional module that incorporated a mnemonic, named ABCD-COPIME, to improve emergency response techniques to a simulated code blue scenario. Seven nursing students completed 7 trials of responding to a code blue simulation. After each trial, skill accuracy was assessed with a skills checklist, and after Trials 1, 4, and 7, each student’s confidence was measured by self-report. A …

The development of a new nursing curriculum in one Australian university provided the opportunity for academic staff to consider the best ways to integrate the requirements of evidence-based practice (EBP) into nursing education and culminated in the development and conduct of a specific benchmarking project. Data collection for the project included the use of university documents, observations and informal discussions with staff. An analysis of this information resulted in the emergence of five categories that were grouped into two major categories, namely infrastructure and processes.
