Returning To Ulysses: The Need For Ireland's Higher Education Institutions To Re-Imagine The Provision Of Entrepreneurship Education, Thomas Cooney, Kathleen Farrell, Paul Hannon
Conference papers
This paper is a detailed analysis of entrepreneurship education in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on the island of Ireland based on a survey of all twenty-six institutions. The paper examines the number and types of courses and activities currently being offered to students and concludes that the vast majority of the existing provision is quite traditional in its approach. It is further argued that entrepreneurship education needs to be re-imagined if it is to meet the needs of Ireland’s current economic and social challenges, and that educators should seek inspiration from some of the island’s most creative artists from its …
Designing An Effective Music Teacher Evaluation System (Part Two), Amy Clements-Cortés
Designing An Effective Music Teacher Evaluation System (Part Two), Amy Clements-Cortés
Music Faculty Publications
Danielson & McGreal (2000) state that an effective teacher evaluation system must contain three elements: a) a coherent definition of the domain of teaching - "What," h) techniques for assessing all aspects of teaching-"How," and c) trained evaluators who can make consistent judgments about performance - "Who." In part one (which appeared in the previous issue of this journal) I examined some of the issues associated with these three areas. In part two below I designed a potential music teacher evaluation system that contains these elements for the school system in Ontario, Canada. On the whole, the proposed system is …

Serendipity And Persistence: A Journey Building A Rich Music-Making Culture In Public Schools, Constance Cook
Serendipity And Persistence: A Journey Building A Rich Music-Making Culture In Public Schools, Constance Cook
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
I am a music teacher in the public schools. This synthesis project presents a Practitioner’s Portfolio to convey my efforts over the last decade and more in pursuit of a rich culture of music in public schools. Readers should see someone who persists when faced with personal, pedagogical, intellectual, and institutional challenges. Moreover, that persistence is conducive of the serendipity through which opportunities open up to be an agent of change. What is also evident to me as I assembled the Portfolio was that the Kodály model of artist, scholar, and pedagogue seems to have been the underpinning for much …

The Status Of Students With Special Needs In The Instrumental Musical Ensemble And The Effect Of Selected Educator And Institutional Variables On Rates Of Inclusion, Edward C. Hoffman Iii
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance
The purpose of this study was to describe the current status of students with special needs in the instrumental musical ensemble and to examine the effect of selected educator and institutional variables on rates of inclusion. An online survey was designed by the researcher and distributed electronically to 600 practicing K-12 instrumental music educators in the states of Idaho, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and Rhode Island. While 13.6% of the total school-aged population nationwide received special education services, demographic data provided by respondents revealed that students with special needs accounted for 6.8% of all students participating in bands, orchestras, …
A Study Of K-12 Music Educators' Attitudes Toward Technology-Assisted Assessment Tools, Lance D. Nielsen
A Study Of K-12 Music Educators' Attitudes Toward Technology-Assisted Assessment Tools, Lance D. Nielsen
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance
The purpose of this study was to examine K-12 music educators’ attitudes regarding the use of technology in the assessment of music learning. There is a considerable range of musical behaviors with different levels of complexity that can be assessed (Boyle & Radocy, 1987). A variety of software and web-based assessment tools are available for music educators. However, it is unclear how many teachers are taking advantage of incorporating these technological assessment tools into their instructional practice. This study provided current data about the demographics of teachers using technology to assess musical growth and the variables that might motivate a …

Research in the field of neuroscience has exploded in the past decade. The word brain appears in the title of nearly 40,000 books and CDs indicating intense interest in this area of study. What can music educators learn from recent investigations—often termed brain research—to guide music teaching and learning? The following ideas are intended to have broad applications and may inspire you to investigate this fascinating area of literature more thoroughly. While some findings are new, other studies affirm what music educators have previously found to be effective.

The Development Of Musical Improvisation In Second Grade Children, Akiko Yoshizawa
The Development Of Musical Improvisation In Second Grade Children, Akiko Yoshizawa
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate if second-grade children could develop a solo improvisation on an Orff xylophone. Participants were five African-American children who attended a model school that followed an inquiry-based approach curriculum. These children also had a chance to learn music from a faculty and the researcher, who had been exploring constructivist methods of teaching music, with a special emphasis on invented songs, instruments, and notations. The three-day study focused on how children were able to create a solo improvisation. The study was guided by the following questions: (1) Can second grade children develop …
