Economic And Performance Analysis Of Achilles Tendon Rupture In The National Basketball Association, Abram Qiu, Kristopher Meadows, Osasu Iyawe, Fei Ye, Kenneth Kenneth-Nwosa

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Achilles tendon ruptures are common and potentially career-ending injuries for National Basketball Association (NBA) players. Many studies review the impact of Achilles tendon ruptures on return to play (RTP) and performance, but there are no studies on their economic significance. PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze the economic and performance consequences of Achilles tendon ruptures. The financial burden for NBA teams was represented by the cost of recovery (COR) as well as preinjury salary and career success. We hypothesized that players with higher pre-injury salaries or performance would have an increased cost of recovery, higher rates of RTP, and …

An Analysis Of Horizontal Forces Between Sports, Riley Neuenburg, Brock Crews, Jared W. Coburn, Kevin Choe Nov 2022

An Analysis Of Horizontal Forces Between Sports, Riley Neuenburg, Brock Crews, Jared W. Coburn, Kevin Choe

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Different sports have various demands that athletes must meet to perform at the requisite level. For example, hockey athletes produce primarily horizontal forces due to skating. However, in basketball, there are a combination of horizontal forces from running and vertical forces from frequent jumping. Therefore, utilizing forces exclusively in one direction as a metric to compare athletes of different sports could provide a limited analysis. PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to compare the relationship between horizontal and vertical forces between athletes who participate in the 4 major sports in the US by using a ratio of horizontal …

Changes In Leukocyte Hspa1a, Hspb1 Mrna In Basketball Players After Plyometric Training, Malgorzata Zychowska, Eglė Kemerytė-Riaubienė, Audrius Gocentas, Nijole Jascaniniene, Grzegorz Chruscinski Mar 2022

Changes In Leukocyte Hspa1a, Hspb1 Mrna In Basketball Players After Plyometric Training, Malgorzata Zychowska, Eglė Kemerytė-Riaubienė, Audrius Gocentas, Nijole Jascaniniene, Grzegorz Chruscinski

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: Exercise-induced stressors activate leukocyte HSPA1A and HSPB1 gene transcripts. However it is not clear how plyometric training affects the expression of these genes in basketball players under plyometric exercise. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the changes in leukocyte HSPA1A and HSPB1 mRNA, in male basketball players after plyometric training. Material/Methods: Twelve male college basketball players (age 22.1 ±2.96 years) took part in this study. Peripheral blood (2.0 ml) was collected from the ulnar vein of each participant before and after a plyometric exercise to assess HSPA1A and HSPB1 mRNA relative expression of leukocyte via quantitative …

Proposal Of An Observation Sheet For Basketball Players’ Performance Assessment, Andrzej Szwarc, Izabela Lekner Mar 2022

Proposal Of An Observation Sheet For Basketball Players’ Performance Assessment, Andrzej Szwarc, Izabela Lekner

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: The aim of this study was to develop a research tool used for an assessment of basketball players’ performance. Material/Methods: First, research of the subject literature was made and a preliminary outline of an assessment sheet for basketball players was developed. Next, after causing test observation, the final model of the observation sheet was prepared, and its reliability was evaluated. To measure the inter-observer agreement three experts independently viewed the same game, where they had to assess different components of game performance using the newly developed instrument. The inter- and intra-observer agreement was calculated by means of the kappa-values. …

Test 8 × 32.8 M As A Diagnostic And Fitness Level Control Indicator In Basketball (Diagnostic Test In Basketball), Stanislaw Przybylski, Piotr Makar, Grzegorz Bielec Mar 2022

Test 8 × 32.8 M As A Diagnostic And Fitness Level Control Indicator In Basketball (Diagnostic Test In Basketball), Stanislaw Przybylski, Piotr Makar, Grzegorz Bielec

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: Physiological studies conducted for over 20 years on basketball players have shown an increasing share of anaerobic efforts during the game. The players' throw effectiveness and their ability to move quickly on the playing field often determine the result of the match. The current control of kinematics and biochemical variables is crucial in the modern training process. Material/Methods: The study was conducted on an 11-person group of male athletes from a Polish first-league basketball team. The subjects had to perform a fitness test proposed by the authors: 8×32.8m with bouncing, throwing a ball to the basket and running back …

Effects Of 6-Week Basketball Training Using The Modified Circuit Weight Method, Jaroslaw Omorczyk, Tadeusz Ambroży, Ewa Puszczalowska-Lizis, Mateusz Nowak, Andrzej Markowski Mar 2022

Effects Of 6-Week Basketball Training Using The Modified Circuit Weight Method, Jaroslaw Omorczyk, Tadeusz Ambroży, Ewa Puszczalowska-Lizis, Mateusz Nowak, Andrzej Markowski

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

The study aim was to evaluate the effect of a 6-week modified workout routine using the modified circuit weight method on selected anthropometric measures, components of physical fitness and physiological indices in competitive basketball players. The study involved 30 basketball players (mean age: 23.4 ±1.8 years). Modified circuit weight method sessions were repeated 3 times a week. Each training session was subdivided into 3 circuits: strength conditioning, exercises to enhance functional fitness and a circuit of sport-specific exercises. Statistically significant differences in values of circumferences and skinfolds were found between pre-test and post-test values, with no statistically significant changes in …

Determination Of Maximal Oxygen Uptake Through A New Basketball-Specific Field Test, Ersen Adsiz, Gulbin Rudarli Nalcakan, S. Rana Varol, Faik Vural Mar 2022

Determination Of Maximal Oxygen Uptake Through A New Basketball-Specific Field Test, Ersen Adsiz, Gulbin Rudarli Nalcakan, S. Rana Varol, Faik Vural

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

The aim of this study was to develop a new basketball-specific field test (BSFT) that determines the maximal oxygen uptake indirectly and to determine the reliability and validity of the test for measuring aerobic power. An aerobic endurance-based test totalling 1.5 miles on a basketball court including side steps and running was designed to be completed as quickly as possible. 15-year-old, male basketball players’ maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) levels measured directly as the gold standard laboratory test. Laboratory test results showed a significant negative correlation between the VO2max level and the duration of the BSFT (r = -0.705, p = …

Ankle Injuries And Ankle Strength, Flexibility, And Proprioception In College Basketball Players, Kristen A. Payne, Kris E. Berg, Richard W. Latin

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Injuries to the ankle joint are among the most common of all sport-related injuries. Figures range from 10% to 30% of all injuries and from 5% to 20% of all time-loss injuries.1-9 Athletes participating in sports such as football, soccer, basketball, and volleyball are especially at risk for this type of injury, largely because of the running and jumping involved. In 1977, Garrick3 reported that during any single year of a 6-year period at the University of Washington, at least 16% of all time-loss injuries for all sports involved ankle sprains.
