Rapid Cycle Deliberate Practice And The Zeigarnik-Ovsiankina Phenomenon As A Method Of Learning And Achieving Long-Term Retention Of Airway Management – A Longitudinal Observational Study, Kirsten R. Kim Sawtelle, Andrew L. Guymon, Valeriy Kozmenko

Aesculapius Journal (Health Sciences & Medicine)

Introduction: This study investigates the effectiveness of Rapid Cycle Deliberate Practice (RCDP) in preparing medical students for the AAMC's entrustable professional activity of airway management. The best simulation training technique for airway management remains unknown. RCDP is well-suited for simulation-based sequential and algorithmic tasks.

Methods: Sixty-seven second-year medical students participated in three one-hour sessions on Airway Management and IV Induction into Anesthesia. They were randomly assigned to control or test groups, practicing under traditional RCDP or RCDP+ Zeigarnik-Ovsiankina phenomenon (ZOP) learning methods, respectively. The control group completed the entire attempt before debriefing, while the test group restarted immediately after the …

Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate evidence-informed practice knowledge, capacity, and skills of senior baccalaureate nursing students, nurses, and nursing faculty involved with the dedicated education unit/collaborative learning unit (DEU/CLU) practice education model. Secondary objectives were to: 1) explore student, nurse, and faculty DEU/CLU practice education experience, and 2) obtain nurses views of the DEU/CLU practice education model and suggestions for improvement.

Method: We used a convergent parallel mixed-methods design with a nested case study. Data were collected across 23 DEU/CLUs within three acute care facilities and one university with students (n = 18), nurses …

Empathy And High-Fidelity Human Patient Simulators: A Critical Analysis Of Undergraduate Nursing Education, Gina Jang, Sherry Dahlke Oct 2024

Empathy And High-Fidelity Human Patient Simulators: A Critical Analysis Of Undergraduate Nursing Education, Gina Jang, Sherry Dahlke

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Abstract

This paper critically examines the role of high-fidelity human patient simulators in undergraduate nursing education, particularly for empathy development. While high-fidelity human patient simulators are instrumental for clinical skills practice, they fall short of adequately fostering empathy. Underlining the centrality of empathy in nurse–patient relationships for positive health outcomes, blended learning approaches integrating role-play with human-to-human interactions are suggested. In this discussion paper, the historical perspectives on empathy, the challenges in measuring and developing empathy, the impact of the pandemic-induced shift to simulation-based clinical training, and the influence of neoliberal values on nursing education are examined. We explore research …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the narrative accounts of new graduate nurses reflecting upon their transition to practice and professional identity formation in order to identify how experiences of becoming and being nurses may inform nursing education, policy, and practice with relation to recruitment and retention of nurses.

Background: There is a global shortage of nurses, further exacerbated by a greater desire to leave the profession since the COVID-19 pandemic. As nursing students transition into the roles of new graduate nurses, they begin to form stronger role-oriented identities. These have been associated with greater job satisfaction …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Bullying in nursing education and practice is an ongoing and long-standing issue. Nursing students and new graduates are especially vulnerable to experiencing bullying. In this study, the student–faculty partnership team highlights one arts-based initiative within an overall project designed to support students, faculty members, and academic and practice leaders in addressing bullying in nursing education and nursing practice. We share our experience of creating interactive video vignettes (freely available at https://letsact.ca/interactive-video-vignettes/) that focus on the experience of bullying of a newly graduated registered nurse (RN), an RN witness, an experienced RN who engages in bullying behaviour, and the nurse leader …

Incorporating Real-Time Simulated Patient And Instructor Feedback To Enhance Simulation Learning Experience For Occupational Therapy Students: A Mixed Methods Study, Lauren Woods, Pamela Lewis-Kipkulei, Kuan Xing

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Health care simulation experiences should provide clear feedback that students can understand and incorporate into future practice. Based on the literature, more research is needed regarding how health professional students use various types of feedback to establish rapport with clients, increase critical thinking skills, and work collaboratively. Various types of feedback may be useful in regular simulation-based education, but there is limited research on how students integrate various feedback to enhance skill development. This study aimed to examine how occupational therapy (OT) students incorporate real-time Simulated Patient (SP) feedback, numerical feedback, and instructor-written feedback to enhance their learning from the …

Assessing The Climate Readiness Of Physician Education Leaders In Graduate Medical Education, Deborah Simpson, Anne Getzin, Aaron A. Levy, Victoria Gillet

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Climate change affects patient health through an array of exposures, including increasing heatwaves, extreme weather events, poor air quality, and expanding vector-borne illnesses. Physicians are at the forefront of addressing the health consequences of these exposures with patients, and environmental sustainability has become a priority for health care organizations. Accordingly, climate change and health is becoming a critical area for graduate medical education (GME). As GME leaders design and drive education in residency and fellowship programs, understanding those leaders’ baseline knowledge on this topic and its alignment with their organizations’ priorities is an essential step in the development of climate …

Innovative Pandemic Community-Based Student Learning: Development Of Remote Experiential Learning, Amy Christopher

Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education

Objective: Review and reflect upon innovative experiential learning and student volunteer hours during remote isolation of pandemic times.

Introduction: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, experiential learning for U.S. university graduate-level health care professional programs struggled to find clinical rotation sites and provide students in the didactic curricular phase opportunities to apply health education outside of the classroom. Many healthcare sites and community health screening events were prohibited during an extended period of time due to pandemic isolation. As a health educator, exploration of remote, independent, and virtual experiential learning took creative planning to ensure students were able to apply …

Thus, the purpose of this concept analysis was to identify the defining attributes of holistic reviews and provide an operational definition. Methods: Walker and Avant’s description of a concept analysis served as a guide for this review. This systematic process included an analysis of current literature, legal proceedings, and organizational documents; identification of …

This pseudo-experimental research employed a one-group pretest-posttest design with three treatments. Participants were selected using purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria: suffering from non-specific low back pain, willingness to participate, and age between 20 and 65 years. …
