Hittell dedicated the first portion of Volume 3 to early mining times in California including Pioneer mines, miners and mining appliances, Northern California mines, Southern California mines, gold distribution and gold rushes, struggles for organization and order, evolution of mining laws, and the lynch-law in the mines.
