With only 55.5% of U.S. college students graduating with a bachelor’s degree within 6 years there is an obvious need for interventions that will help students adjust to college culture and teach learning habits that foster students’ abilities to persist to graduation. This presentation will illuminate the process of weaving together study skills, a common reading book and life on a college campus to design a cohesive first year seminar that facilitates student success.

A Critical Examination Of The Relationship Between The Use Of Gatekeepers, Trust, And Organisation Knowledge-Sharing, Deogratias Harorimana Dr
Dr Deogratias Harorimana
This thesis critically examines the relationship between gatekeepers, trust, and an organisation’s knowledge sharing. The research applied mixed methods with the case study approach. In this research the concept ‘gatekeeper’ is widely used to represent a class of those who are part of a knowledge management strategy; they collect information and knowledge and contextualise this before they can share it with the rest of the members of the organisation’s knowledge networks - within the formal and informal organisation. In this study, it was found that there was a strong relationship between the openness of a given firm, as regards its …

Organizational Leadership In Academic Libraries : Identifying Culture Types And Leadership Roles, Monica Garcia Brooks
Organizational Leadership In Academic Libraries : Identifying Culture Types And Leadership Roles, Monica Garcia Brooks
Monica Brooks
The purpose of this study is to identify organizational culture types and leadership roles among research and non-research libraries in higher education institutions in the United States and to reveal trends that can assist in enacting needed organizational change. Organizational culture and leadership are two intertwined concepts that are strongly aligned with the human element of any supervisory experience. According to Crosby, they help “nurture effective and humane organizations” (Crosby, 2004). This research project sought to test the claims brought forth by library researchers such as Kaarts-Brown et al. in which they reported a tie between the library manager’s ability …

Co-authorship is used to measure scholarly collaborations of countries, institutions, and individuals. It refers to the process in which two or more authors or researchers collaborate with each other to create a joint-work through collaboration methods and channels. Although many studies have been conducted to analyze the individual or field co-authorships in Iran, a little have concerned the organisational co-authorships in this country. This study aims to analyze organisational coauthorships among Iranian top universities based on proximity rule and Matthew effect. Data were limited to published articles affiliated to top universities in Iran and extracted from the Web of Science …

Kimberly Anderson will share her experience of transforming a class on archival outreach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The fully online course, “Archival Outreach: Programs and Services” was re-worked into conceptual modules that formed the underpinning for the class. These concepts were reinforced throughout the semester and students were asked to use them as a framing throughout the discussion and applied activities. The resultant class was a dramatic departure from the both the previous iterations of the course and the way in which other courses in the archives program are taught, which have previously focused heavily on practices. Information Literacy & Pogil: A New Approach To Using Inquiry Learning In Libraries, Margie Ruppel
Information Literacy & Pogil: A New Approach To Using Inquiry Learning In Libraries, Margie Ruppel
Margie Ruppel
[Poster Presentation] Pre-service teachers at Boise State University enrolled in a piloted one-credit library research course, in which the POGIL method was used to teach information literacy and Web 2.0 skills. The faculty librarian employed the POGIL learning method in order to improve students’ depth of learning and increase their engagement with the information-seeking process. Learning outcomes included building pre-service teachers’ content knowledge; increasing familiarity with inquiry learning; recognizing and solving information problems using the Big6 Skills framework; evaluating primary and secondary sources; and utilizing state-funded information resources in their teaching. The overall goal of the course was two-fold: to …

How end-users and stakeholders value a digital collection is one of the most compelling questions in library assessment. This presentation reports on a series of interviews with stakeholders and potential end-users of the digital collection “Western Writers Series Digital Editions.” These interviews were undertaken to determine in what ways these digital humanities materials might be used by scholars and incorporated into their research process. Interview participants were identified through scholarly citations and works cited lists. The outcomes of these interviews are supplemented by additional interviews with the editors of the original print editions of the Western Writers Series, as well as …

The Internet has significantly changed the ways in which information is provided, particularly in libraries. Libraries are buying increasing numbers of electronic reference (e-Reference) materials which are buried in the catalog or on web pages, not to be easily found by the user. Unlike print reference books, e-Reference books are not found on libraries’ reference shelves and, therefore, are underused. Libraries face the dilemma of how to make e-Reference books more accessible to patrons. Kansas State University Libraries are addressing this challenge by using the powerful metadata behind OPAC records to create browsable e-Reference lists. These lists are also published …

Librarians at National Louis University have been engaged with stakeholders for the past four years to integrate Information Literacy into the undergraduate curriculum that goes beyond traditional instruction. The outcome was a 2 credit course on Digital Information Literacy now required in three undergraduate degree programs. The success of this course resulted in the creation of additional credit courses tailored to the learning outcomes of specific programs. We have learned from this process how to strategically discuss Information Literacy with academic departments. In this session, we will draw from our experience to facilitate a group discussion on transforming Information Literacy …
