Western Michigan University has decades worth of unique recorded content on aging magnetic media. WMU’s School of Music has a particularly rich collection of recordings featuring student and faculty ensembles, visiting artist performances, and graduate recitals. Facing the possibility of losing these invaluable recorded sound artifacts through obsolescence or decay, the University Libraries realized we could wait no longer and needed to develop a preservation and digitization strategy to ensure long term access.

This workshop presents an overview of using videos in classroom teaching as well as e-learning classes. WMU Libraries collections of streaming videos can be easily used in face-to-face classes, and embedded in e-learning. Instructional video DVDs are also available. The workshop also covered the process of embedding videos and video clips in websites and classes in D2L.

The issue of course textbooks continues to be a challenge in higher education. For students the primary concern is the skyrocketing costs: spending several hundred dollars for required textbooks per semester at a time when tuition and fees continue to rise. Consequently, students are borrowing, renting or simply forgoing purchasing textbooks to alleviate some of the financial burden. For those students who are unable to purchase textbooks, are they still receiving the same high quality education? Higher education librarians and faculty members alike are faced with an ever expanding palette of technologies available for instructional use. Efforts between these two groups to collaborate in information literacy programs can greatly benefit from the incorporation of some of these new technologies. " Advances taking place in digital imaging technology and projection are changing the way that libraries acquire images for classroom and research use. In the teaching of the visual arts and other subjects where material culture is at the heart of the discipline, pictures of objects are used as surrogates for actual artifacts, since pictorial surrogates allow instructors to talk about a work without having the actual piece present.
