This study examined 1) the effects of extensive listening instruction on English listening comprehension of Thai upper secondary students and 2) how students listen via extensive listening instruction. The participants were eighteen students from a public secondary school who enrolled in the elective subject. They were chosen to participate in the 10-week-instruction by convenient sampling. The instruction instrument was extensive listening instruction which comprises 5 teaching stages: 1) Connect to out-of-class 2) Class-based listening 3) Group-based listening 4) Self-based listening 5) Out-of-class listening. To date, student engagement with written corrective feedback has been investigated qualitatively. This study aimed to (1) investigate the effects of bottom-up (BU) instructional approaches on ESL students’ vocabulary knowledge, (2) investigate the effects of top-down (TD) instructional approaches on ESL students’ vocabulary knowledge (3) compare the effects of the two approaches on the development of vocabulary knowledge of Bhutanese secondary school students, and (4) explore the students’ opinions towards the two approaches. การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) เปรียบเทียบความสามารถในการอ่านเพื่อความเข้าใจของนักเรียนมัธยมศึกษาก่อนและหลังได้รับการจัดการเรียนรู้วรรณกรรมไทยด้วยกลวิธีรีดเดอร์ส เธียเตอร์ ทั้งในภาพรวมและจำแนกตามองค์ประกอบ 2) ศึกษาการเปลี่ยนแปลงความสามารถในการอ่านเพื่อความเข้าใจของนักเรียนมัธยมศึกษาระหว่างได้รับการจัดการเรียนรู้วรรณกรรมไทยด้วยกลวิธีรีดเดอร์ส เธียเตอร์ กลุ่มตัวอย่าง ได้แก่ นักเรียนมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1 โรงเรียนขนาดใหญ่พิเศษ สังกัดสำนักงานเขตพื้นที่การศึกษามัธยมศึกษาเขต 2 จำนวน 43 คน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ประกอบด้วย แบบวัดความสามารถในการอ่านเพื่อความเข้าใจ แบบสะท้อนผลการอ่าน และแผนการจัดการเรียนรู้วรรณกรรมไทยด้วยกลวิธีรีดเดอร์ส เธียเตอร์ วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยใช้ค่าเฉลี่ยเลขคณิต ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน และการทดสอบค่าที ผลการวิจัย พบว่า 1) นักเรียนมีคะแนนเฉลี่ยความสามารถในการอ่านเพื่อความเข้าใจโดยภาพรวมหลังจัดการเรียนรู้สูงกว่าก่อนจัดการเรียนรู้อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .01 เมื่อพิจารณาจำแนกตามองค์ประกอบ พบว่า ทั้ง 7 องค์ประกอบ ได้แก่ การแปลความ การจับใจความ การวิเคราะห์ การตีความ การประเมินค่า การเชื่อมโยง และการถ่ายทอด มีคะแนนเฉลี่ยหลังจัดการเรียนรู้สูงกว่าก่อนจัดการเรียนรู้อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .01 2) ผลการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเชิงคุณภาพเพื่อศึกษาการเปลี่ยนแปลงความสามารถของนักเรียนที่ได้รับการจัดการเรียนรู้วรรณกรรมไทยด้วยกลวิธีรีดเดอร์ส เธียเตอร์ จำแนกตามองค์ประกอบ พบว่า ความสามารถในการอ่านเพื่อความเข้าใจระยะหลังดีขึ้นกว่าระยะแรกทุกองค์ประกอบ

Close reading has become the means to help readers promote comprehension of complex texts. This study implemented the Close Reading instruction for Thai EFL secondary school students and explored their use of close reading strategies. Eighteen secondary school students participated in eleventh weeks to examine the effects of Close Reading instruction on their English reading comprehension. The research instruments were (1) English Reading Comprehension Test, (2) Close Reading Strategies Questionnaire, and (3) Semi-Structured Interview. This study explored the effects of extensive reading on reading comprehension and reading fluency of Bhutanese primary grade students. The participants were 16 fourth grade students in one of the primary schools in Bhutan. The study involved 12 weeks of extensive reading instruction. Participants were introduced to extensive reading, acquainted to selecting appropriate books, and a large number of graded readers with enjoyable content were supplied, and participants read as many books as they could.
