Many refugees are trying to learn English while assimilating to a new culture. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has identified several needs and goals of refugees including competence in the language of the receiving culture and participation in a new, welcoming community. Storytelling, expressing or receiving a narrative through oral or written communication, can be implemented for teaching English to refugees with these goals and can link academic learning with real life experiences. La conciencia cultural conceptualiza la dimensión cultural de la enseñanza de un idioma, lo que permite a los aprendices encontrar discrepancias y diferencias entre su propia cultura y la cultura de la lengua que aprenden. En esta investigación la conciencia cultural presenta un matiz decolonial que muestra cómo la colonialidad en la enseñanza del idioma inglés (ELT) ha ignorado nuestra pluralidad lingüística y cultural. En esa conciencia, los estudiantes pueden contrastar sus situaciones reales y su vida cotidiana como jóvenes colombianos en comparación con los países dominantes de habla inglesa.
