Teaching Quality And Student Outcomes: Academic Achievement And Educational Engagement In Rural Northwest China, Xuehui An, Emily C. Hannum, Tanja Sargent
Emily C. Hannum
A central task of educational researchers has been to uncover factors that improve student academic achievement. Research in both developed and developing nations during the past few decades has analysed the links between educational outcomes and school physical resources, teacher quality and children's demographic and family background. Importantly, research on teacher and school effects in developing countries has focused on factors such as human capital, economic resources and physical infrastructure, the so-called input factors in the "black box" production function model of school outcomes. Fewer studies have focused on the "softer" classroom process factors that might be seen as important …

Keeping Teachers Happy: Job Satisfaction Among Primary School Teachers In Rural Northwest China, Tanja Sargent, Emily Hannum
Emily C. Hannum
Numerous empirical studies from developing countries have noted that parental education has a robust and positive effect on child learning, a result that is often attributed to more educated parents making greater investments in their children's human capital. However, the nature of any such investment has not been well understood. This study examines how parental education affects various parental investments in goods and time used in children's human capital production via an unusually detailed survey from rural China. It is found that more educated parents make greater educational investments in both goods and time and that these relationships are generally …

Globalization And Post-Secondary Education Policy In Canada:A Review Of Trends, Dale Kirby
Globalization And Post-Secondary Education Policy In Canada:A Review Of Trends, Dale Kirby
Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale
In 2005, provincial governments in Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador each commissioned comprehensive public post-secondary education and training system reviews. While there are considerable differences between the systems and policy approaches in these jurisdictions, the final reports of each of these reviews provide an interesting repository of current post-secondary policy tendencies in Canada. The principal arguments and recommendations put forward in the review reports demonstrate the pervasive influence of economic globalization and the continuing shift to a more utilitarian and market-oriented ideological outlook on post-secondary education’s raison d'être. The policies advocated by both reviews illustrate, to varying extents, the impact …

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale
Negotiating Tensions And Roles In International Development: A Workshop For Graduate Students, Jennifer Hales
Negotiating Tensions And Roles In International Development: A Workshop For Graduate Students, Jennifer Hales
Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale
This paper presents the findings from a qualitative research study involving graduate students who are studying or working in international development. The students participated in an activity-based workshop during which they reflected on and discussed their tensions and concerns about the nature of international development and their roles and positions in this work. Tensions ranged from those on a personal level, where students questioned their individual privilege and power in international development, to those on a structural level, where students questioned the overall nature of development practices.
The workshop activities, designed by the author and based on a global education …

Learning To Teach, Learning To Play The Game: A Case Study Of A Minority Teacher Candidate Teaching For Equity, Diversity And Social Justice, Andrew M. A. Allen
Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale
In this article, the author explores the premise that possibilities for social change in an antiracist teacher education program might be revealed by closely examining the struggles and real life experiences of a beginning teacher from a minority background working from the margins of the educational setting. Focusing on the quality of the teaching-learning activities being negotiated and forged, this article is grounded in a study of the tensions, dilemmas and conflicts experienced by teacher candidates learning to teach for social justice. The study revealed that the inherent tensions caused by discontinuities between the intent and critical antiracist philosophy of …

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale
Based on a critical ethnographic research project, this paper is about the impact of becoming Black on ESL learning; that is, the interrelation between identity formation, identification, race, culture and second language learning. It contends that a group of French-speaking immigrant and refugee continental francophone African youths who are attending an urban Franco-Ontarian high school in south- western Ontario, Canada, enters, so to speak, a social imaginary, a discursive space in which they are already imagined, constructed, and thus treated as Blacks by hegemonic discourses and groups. This imaginary is directly implicated in whom they identify with (Black America), which …

As an acknowledgment of the critical role of education in realizing other development targets, the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) of the United Nations include education in a framework of development targets. The MDG targets for education include achieving universal primary education and gender parities in all levels of education by 2015.
Recent global campaigns have added to the momentum of the rapid progress of educational expansion, which began in roughly the 1960s. Countries with universal or near universal participation and completion in elementary education have started to look beyond primary, towards free and compulsory basic education- education up to lower …

Toward Understanding International Students: A Study Conducted At Middle Tennessee State University, Jiannan Wang
Toward Understanding International Students: A Study Conducted At Middle Tennessee State University, Jiannan Wang
The Southeastern Librarian
The number of international students in American universities has increased over the years and has drawn great attention from librarians, library staff, and researchers. In order to serve this particular patron group more effectively, a number of studies have been conducted to understand their difficulties in using American library systems. In consequence, different approaches have been taken to try to help them. As each university or college may have its own library instruction system, and as the composition and features of international students at different universities may vary, it is difficult to apply available strategies without a thorough understanding of …

Impact Of University Rankings: Global Excellence Vs. Local Engagement, Ellen Hazelkorn
Impact Of University Rankings: Global Excellence Vs. Local Engagement, Ellen Hazelkorn

Globalisation is helping to create a ‘single world market’ in higher education (Marginson, 2006). A feature of this process is the emergence of global university rankings which have taken the practice of accountability, quality assurance and benchmarking to a worldwide level. Today, the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities and the Times QS Ranking of World Universities are used by governments and HEIs as a measurement of competitiveness and reputation. An internationalist strategy is imperative not only for governments, but also globally-facing and regionally-focused HEIs. No one is immune. Many HEIs are using rankings to help define targets …

The Standardization Of Scientific Terminology And The Teaching Of The Natural Sciences In Nineteenth-Century Brazil: The Contribution Of Benjamin Ramiz Galvão [A Padronização Da Terminologia Científica E O Ensino Das Ciências Naturais No Brasil Oitocentista: A Contribuição De Benjamin Ramiz Galvão], Karl M. Lorenz
Karl M Lorenz
During the nineteenth century, and the first years of the twentieth century, science textbooks and science teaching in the faculties of medicine and engineering and in the secondary schools of Brazil were characterized by the lack of a standardized scientific terminology. The rules governing the orthography and prosody of many scientific terms in the life, physical and earth sciences were inconsistent. The paper examines this phenomenon and recounts the first significant attempt to standardize scientific terminology in the Portuguese language by the Brazilian philologist, Benjamin Franklin Ramiz Galvão.

Acting on behalf of the EAS, the ASEAN Secretariat has commissioned this project to develop strategies for EAS participants to enhance regional economic competitiveness and strengthen community building in a balanced and sustainable manner through cooperation in education. The project’s scope encompasses regional cooperation in basic education (primary and secondary), technical and vocational education and training, and higher education. This report draws on a literature review of experiences with international educational cooperation, analysis of published data, consultations with education …

Language And Graffiti Of Exceptional Individuals In West Africa, Dr Williams Emeka Obiozor
Dr Williams Emeka Obiozor
This paper establishes the place of language and graffiti practiced by exceptional individuals in the interpretation of family values, the preservation of culture and traditional heritage of the Igbo community in Southeastern Nigeria. The paper also takes a cursory look at graffiti art and exceptionality in a time when the Igbo tradition and culture were highly respected, jealously guarded and deep-rooted in the heart and soul of its people. Graffiti creations by exceptional individuals transfer both oral and visual education to documented tradition; for societal knowledge and awareness, individual wisdom, expressions against repression, pride and recognition of Igbo language and …

Schooling And The “Hygienization” Of Less-Privileged Children In Brazil, 1870-1900, Karl M. Lorenz, Ariclê Vechia, António G. Ferreira
Karl M Lorenz
The movement to broaden educational opportunities for the large number of urban and rural children was widely supported by influential groups within Brazilian society in the late 1800s. These proponents sought to articulate a theory of education that would guide them in their efforts. Several phenomena interacted towards the end of the century to influence Brazilians in this regard. Among these were the prevalence of disease and pestilence, the unhealthy conditions of urban centers, inadequate public and private schools, and a growing propensity to entertain racist themes. This paper explores how these phenomena contributed to a view that the intellectual, …
