Study Abroad For Transformational Learning Opportunities To Build Cultural Intelligence, Nicholas Tran
Study Abroad For Transformational Learning Opportunities To Build Cultural Intelligence, Nicholas Tran
Undergraduate Research Symposium - Prescott
Recent research points to questions on the value for students studying abroad while in college. Our conceptual paper links the transformative learning theory to the three dimensions of cultural intelligence to highlight the value of study abroad to provide life-changing learning opportunities. Through disorienting dilemmas and a process of cultivating critical reflection, study abroad students will generate new meaning schemes, or “habits of the mind” to view the world. In addition to critical reflection, the role of emotions plays a critical role in the development of self-awareness. These transformational learning experiences interconnect with the three-dimensional model of cultural intelligence through …

ICOT 18 - International Conference on Thinking - Cultivating Mindsets for Global Citizens
National Gallery of Art educators Julie Carmean and Sara Lesk propose presenting about their process of transforming research into practice through creating the National Gallery’s first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), specifically for K-12 educators, using the pedagogy of Harvard’s Artful Thinking Routines and the National Gallery’s art collection. This free, international, online learning experience aims to democratize the opportunity for teachers to bring critical thinking through art to their students around the world. Participants will experience a combined onsite/online demonstration of one of their MOOC modules by, first, engaging with a work of art, using an Artful Thinking routine; …

It will also share insights into the challenges that teachers and students report facing when implementing these kinds of activities and how they try to overcome them, drawing on a wide range of feedback from teacher and alumni questionnaires, focus groups, and feedback from teacher professional development workshops.

Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
The project supported by professor Summer Clark, Lesley University.
International students in the U.S. face many challenges. They face a variety of hurdles, including navigating and processing what are often drastic differences in language, culture, educational systems, and lifestyle. Existing surveys, and ethnographic research, and case studies (Hopnick, 2102; Li, et al, 2017; Serino, 2017; Suarez-Orozco, et al., 2008) unpack the variety of ways students from different countries navigate such changes. My project, a pilot study conducted in 2017, contributes to this body of work. I present the results of in-depth, qualitative interviews of two international students’ from Korea and …
