Study Abroad For Transformational Learning Opportunities To Build Cultural Intelligence, Nicholas Tran Oct 2018

Study Abroad For Transformational Learning Opportunities To Build Cultural Intelligence, Nicholas Tran

Undergraduate Research Symposium - Prescott

Recent research points to questions on the value for students studying abroad while in college. Our conceptual paper links the transformative learning theory to the three dimensions of cultural intelligence to highlight the value of study abroad to provide life-changing learning opportunities. Through disorienting dilemmas and a process of cultivating critical reflection, study abroad students will generate new meaning schemes, or “habits of the mind” to view the world. In addition to critical reflection, the role of emotions plays a critical role in the development of self-awareness. These transformational learning experiences interconnect with the three-dimensional model of cultural intelligence through …

Education in Crisis and Conflict Network

This PowerPoint presentation introduces a complex simulation developed by the UMass Education in Crisis and Conflict Network (ECCN) project team. The simulation provided the basic framework of a training workshop for USAID education officers from multiple countries affected by crisis or conflicts, held in Bangkok during the week of October 31 to November 4, 2016.

Simulations are a powerful training methodology that is modeled on real-life situations, but are compressed in time and scope. Simulations are used to provide opportunity for active participation of all participants and to require them to understand various stakeholders. By having to take on various …

In light of China’s recent reemergence as a global superpower, it is becoming increasingly important for westerners to understand its history and culture. For current college students, the culture of China’s youth is particularly pertinent.

In this project, a course, HPR 107: Chinese Youth Culture, was designed and taught through the Students-Teaching-Students program, which provides senior Honor’s Program students the opportunity to design and teach their own Honor’s Program course. The HPR 107 course focuses on China’s 80后 and 90后 generations, those born in the 1980s and 1990s, respectively.

Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium

The Bridge Year Program is a 9-month program that enables newly admitted undergraduate students from Princeton University to spend a year of public service in Serbia, with Princeton University support, before they begin their studies. The program in Serbia, implemented by SIT/WL, includes individualized community service placements in youth organizations in Novi Sad (September to December 2009) and Roma organizations in Niš (January to May 2010) as well as group activities including orientation, intensive language training, weekly debriefings, local educational excursions and enrichment programs. International Education And International Organization Relations: Challenges Of Obtaining Practicum Opportunities, Charlotte Karungi Mafumbo Phd, Academic Director

Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium

This paper examines the challenges that are being faced by the School for International Training (SIT) program in operating in a country that has experienced a plethora of international organizations in most of its districts. The paper locates the challenges in the wider framework of the operations of international education and draws on the current situation in Uganda’s selected districts to demonstrate how the competition between other international organizations (this includes educational institutions such as Universities and training wings of International Non Governmental Organizations) has narrowed the practicum catchment area for the SIT program. Divided into three sections, the first …

Toward An Action-Oriented Approach To Global Citizenship: Tools For The Young Global Citizen, Siena Fleischer Ma, Manager Of Administration – Latin America And Europe, Vikas Budakoti Ma, Manager Of Administration – Asia & The Pacific

Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium

We have reached a point in the evolution of global citizenship where the call to action is no longer critical, it is imperative. Sustainable change is the cornerstone of the effort to bring communities together to prioritize needs and implement intelligent growth. Development must be transformative, not palliative. Those who engage in education abroad have the unique and promising opportunity to address global issues and become active participants in the development process. Younger citizens often choose to pursue opportunities both small and large that contribute to safeguarding dignity while advancing growth. Students are often better positioned and more effective than …

Colvin Phd, Mph, Program Director, Faculty And Country Coordinator, South Africa, Health And Community

Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium

In 2005, the International Honors Program, a longstanding organization that runs comparative study abroad programs, launched its “Health and Community” (HC) Program. The program is offered to upper-level undergraduates from across the US and from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds. It travels to four countries in one semester and uses lectures, site visits, case study research and homestay experiences to engage students in critical and comparative thinking about health and illness at both the global and community levels. The interdisciplinary curriculum combines the perspectives of political economy, medical anthropology, and public health and each country program focuses learning around …

Learning From Homestay Hosts, Alison Swartz Mph Candidate, Program Assistant, Jesse Delaughter Ma, Assistant Program Director

Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium

Homestay hosts play a pivotal role in many study abroad programs, including all of ours at IHP. We know that homestays are an important part of the learning experience for our students. We hear it anecdotally from alumni and read generally positive reviews of homestays in student evaluations. We talk about homestays as a program element that contributes to learning and fosters intercultural exchange, but we don’t really know what students are learning from their hosts or what kind of exchange is occurring. We have not typically incorporated hosts into the core of the academic program in the way that …

Evaluating primary enrollment figures for rural children particularly girls against sex ration for newborns and NGO reports of lack of birth registrations of girls (hei hukou), produces a net primary enrollment rate (49%) half of the official data (98%). Poverty data and One-Child Policy fines explain the context of the lower enrollment rates.
