Head Coach Rick Filighera, 36, enters his seventh season at the helm of the Black Bears women’s ice hockey program, and ninth as a head coach. Filighera, who was announced as the first head coach of the University of Maine varsity women’s ice hockey team in September 1997, has a record of 74-87-14 in six seasons at Maine and an overall record of 98-96-16 in eight seasons of head coaching. Filighera’s record of 24-9-2 in two seasons at Rochester Institute of Technology, combined with his record at Maine, ranks him 11th among college coaches in career wins.

After beginning 15-1-2 a year ago, the University of Maine men's ice hockey team had a disappointing finish to the 2002- 03 season, losing to Michigan in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Black Bears will use that memory to inspire them as they take the ice in 2003-04. The squad learned valuable lessons down the stretch last year and enter the season with a fire to prove that the first half of last year was not a fluke.
The Black Bears lost nine letterwinners from last year's squad, but return a solid nucleus at all three positions. …

The University of Maine softball team enters the 2003 campaign after playing in the America East Tournament last season for the first time in four years. Despite losing four All-Conference players off that squad, the Black Bears have a solid nucleus returning, along with seven rookies, that should keep them in the title hunt again this season.
