The Student Association of Maine has embraced an ominous task. In its effort to represent 32,000 post-secondary students throughout the state, conflicts are bound to surface. But if SAM can unify its student membership, the prospects for developing a powerful voice in Augusta, a voice that would be heard in the halls of the State House and reverberate back to individual campuses are bright.

Its propellant is in the person of UMO's Peter Simin, and its payload is the interests of 32,000 post-secondary students in Maine.

The UMO chapter of the Muslim Students' Association, a North American Muslim student religious organization, will celebrate the "Id" with a get-together open to everyone, Thursday night in the Memorial Union's Bangor Room. The local chapter's 20 members will serve refreshments and special desserts from Muslim countries of the Mid-East, including Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Over 300 paying observers attended the well-organized gathering which met with no violent opposition, picketing, or demonstrations as had been feared by some UMO administrators. Despite loud dissent from a number of residents, Somerset Hall has been the most responsive Hilltop dorm to a need for housing for guests attending the Maine Gay Symposium on campus this weekend. Members of the campus Wilde-Stein Club, hosts for the statewide convention, could not get space for weekend guests at Augusta Hall on the Bangor campus where accommodations are usually made for those attending conventions at the university. Members of the DeMolay are staying there this weekend.
