This thesis offers an original translation and analysis of a West African didactic poem in Islamic ethics and law, by the Mālikī-Ashʿarī Mauritanian scholar Aḥmad al-Ṣaghīr (d. 1272 AH/1856 CE) called The Faqīh’s Lantern (Miṣbāḥ al-Faqīh). In addition to the critical translation, I examine the poem thematically through the lens of social virtue epistemology. Chapter 1 sketches the background of the text and author, positioning the author historically as a product of a rich scholarly and pedagogical tradition while noting Mauritania’s contemporary place in the North American Muslim imagination. Chapter 2 is the translation of the text, making …
Investigating Six Nations Day School Records From 1879 To 1953, Sarah Stavridis
Investigating Six Nations Day School Records From 1879 To 1953, Sarah Stavridis
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
From the 1860s to the 1990s, approximately 700 Indian Day Schools operated across Canada, with twelve being in Six Nations of the Grand River. Day schools were intended to assimilate Indigenous children, to erase Indigenous cultures and languages. Children experienced physical, verbal, and sexual abuse.
Library and Archives Canada have digitized, publicly accessible microfilm reels containing files from residential schools and day schools. To make the information regarding the Six Nations and New Credit Day Schools more accessible, I catalogued the content in the files into a searchable database and summarized the notable findings in a poster.
Remembrance As Presence: Promoting Learning From Difficult Knowledge At The Canadian Museum For Human Rights, Kelsey Perreault

This thesis explores the relationship between memorial museums and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR), Winnipeg. Although the CMHR self-defines as an idea museum, using theories of remembrance, commemorative museum pedagogy, memory, and difficult knowledge, the CMHR is also easily situated in the growing global network of memorial museums. Angela Failler's theory of consolatory hope and my own theory of past-future dissonance suggest that there are several reasons the CMHR has not fulfilled its intended mandate of advocating for human rights in the present. Through a compare and contrast approach, this paper argues that the CMHR should look to …

During the 1960s and 1970s, Ontario educators were concerned that the “sexual revolution” would encourage youths to engage in sexually promiscuous behaviour, become unwed mothers, and contract STIs. As parents were perceived as unreliable sex educators, school administrators and educators felt compelled to teach traditional sexual values, and the importance of the nuclear family through sexual education. This dissertation analyzes the creation and instruction of sexual education in physical and health education courses throughout the 1960s and 1970s in Ontario. This study provides the first comprehensive discussion of sexual education in Ontario during the sixties and seventies through an examination …
Defending Liberal Education: Implications For Educational Policy, Christopher W. Lyons
Defending Liberal Education: Implications For Educational Policy, Christopher W. Lyons
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis advocates for the inclusion of liberal education in discussions of the college and university missions and mandates in North America. It is conceived with the purpose of influencing policy thinking and generating the theory and ideas required for sound education policy decision making. Research into liberal education is a special and atypical kind of inquiry and requires innovative theoretical approaches. Liberal education is foremost a philosophical problem and requires philosophical approaches. The method used is, therefore, conceptual in nature and drawn from analytical philosophy.
My research approaches liberal education conceptually in three ways: historically, philosophically, and politically. Historically, …
