Most current professionals who serve in an enrollment management leadership capacity likely were trained “on the job,” or at professional development events, primarily because credit‐bearing credentials, degrees, and other formal programs were non‐existent (Phair, 2014). However, that landscape has since changed and now there are multiple ways for enrollment management professionals to receive a formal education to enhance one’s enrollment management skill set. This risk is particularly pronounced with small spacecraft projects, as a failure of the spacecraft on-orbit can result in a complete failure of the mission. However, student involvement in these projects is critical to allow research aims to be accomplished, in a university setting, and to train the next generation of spacecraft engineering professionals. The nature of risks posed by student involvement is discussed and a framework for assessing and mitigating these risks presented.

The past twenty years have brought about a paradigm shift in higher education. During that time, we have changed our focus from what we want to teach to what students need to learn. The academy's position of unassailable authority has been usurped by public cries for transparency, accountability, quality assurance, and quality improvement. To cut expenses, and therefore deter the rising cost of postsecondary education, institutions have borrowed best business practices and started focusing on productivity, efficiency, and reallocating resources.
