This insightful and innovative PDW will 1) describe some of the results of a qualitative research study on the leadership development of ten women university presidents, and 2) provide participants with an opportunity to engage in self-analysis and personal reflection. "Leadership" will be broadly framed as leading from a formal position (e.g., president, VP, dean, associate dean, department chair, or committee chair) as well as influencing without an official title or formal authority; therefore, conference attendees interested in influencing change at any level in higher education would benefit.

This paper described a survey of fraternity members' satisfaction with their experiences in a Residential Learning Community within Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. RLCs include a faculty member who has an office within the chapter facility, who teaches a course for credit within the chapter, and who supervises educational programming within the chapter. Chapters who attain RLC status must apply for re-accreditation as an RLC on a periodic basis.

An Analysis Of Attendance At Major League Baseball Spring Training Games, Michael R. Donihue, David Findlay, Peter Newberry

This paper examines the determinants of game-day attendance during Major League Baseball’s 2002 spring training season in Florida. Our model of game-day attendance includes location, quality of game, and time and weather variables. A censored Tobit estimation procedure is used to estimate our model. Our results indicate that the quality of the game, average ticket price, and several location-specific factors affect attendance. Specifically, our results suggest that changes in income have no effect on attendance while increases in ticket prices cause reductions in attendance. Individual identity determines status in the hierarchy. People jockey for changes in status. There are clear rules for moving up and down in status. National media and international journalists watched in March 2007, as voters in the Cherokee Nation decided issues of citizenship. Reporters looked at the same situation and often talked with the same people, but they didn’t always see the same story.

Some journalists saw the Cherokee-Freedmen story as one about race and civil rights; some saw it as being about Cherokee sovereignty and Indian identity. This content analysis investigates media reporting on the issue.

En base a una encuesta organizacional aplicada a 2,697 estudiantes de una universidad pública estatal se identificó la perspectiva de los mismos sobre la institución (infraestructura, gestión, actividades de docencia, etc.) y su trabajo como estudiantes. En general, los estudiantes manifestaron una opinión positiva de la institución excepto en relación a los asuntos relacionados con el gobierno institucional. Los resultados se discuten en cuanto a su aportación a nuestra comprensión de la vida estudiantil.

Although progress has been made, it remains clear that women are still underrepresented in administrative positions in all types of higher educational institutions throughout the world. While the issue is often now addressed in the literature, there are still few articles reporting research findings on the experiences and perceptions of university presidents, particularly women. Ten women university presidents were interviewed using the phenomenological research methodology. This paper reports the results of this research related to the presidents’ perceptions of their own leadership styles and philosophies.

African American, Latino, and Asian first-year college men (36) saw The Men’s Program, an all-male rape prevention workshop, and wrote answers to four open ended questions to determine how men from non-white groups react to a commonly used rape prevention program. Using a multi-stage inductive analysis, participant responses fell into five main themes including reinforced current beliefs and/or no changes, increased awareness of rape and its effects on survivors, increased understanding of consent, plans to intervene if a rape might occur, and plans to change behavior in their own intimate situations. Sexual Assault Survivors’ Perceptions Of Campus Judicial Systems., John D. Foubert, Dallas Durant

The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the experiences and perceptions of college sexual assault survivors who seek formal, on-campus action against their perpetrators. The authors interviewed seven female survivors from various institutions across the country and compiled themes and suggestions relating to their experiences. Participants reported substantial dissatisfaction with both the on-campus judicial process and the outcome of that process. They also noted several key positive aspects of the on-campus judicial system. Implications for counselors and other professionals who support rape survivors are discussed.

Creating Lasting Attitude And Behavior Change In Fraternity Members And Male Student Athletes: The Qualitative Impact Of An Empathy-Based Rape Prevention Program., John D. Foubert, Brad C. Perry

Fraternity members and male student athletes responded to open-ended questions assessing the impact of an empathy-based rape prevention program. All participants reported either lasting attitude or behavior changes; most reported both. Participants reported increased understanding of how rape might feel and attributed this change to seeing a videotape describing a male-on-male rape situation. Participants refrained from telling jokes about rape and reported feeling more effective when helping survivors seeking assistance. These behavior changes were attributed to the videotape and to a section of the program encouraging participants to confront rape jokes and challenge sexist behaviors.

First-year men at a midsized public university either saw a rape prevention program or were in a control group and were asked to complete attitude and behavior surveys at the beginning and end of an academic year. Participants were also asked whether they joined fraternities during that year. With 90% of first-year men participating throughout the duration of the study, results showed that men who joined fraternities during the year and had seen a rape prevention program at the beginning of the academic year were significantly less likely to commit a sexually coercive act during the year than control group …

As part of a larger investigation into the experiences of 25 evangelical Christian student leaders at two public universities, students were interviewed to determine how they conceptualized their religious identity as well as how that dimension of their identity impacted their roles and responsibilities as students. Results suggest that the public identity work of these students may involve two interrelated, yet distinct, processes: identity revelation and "identity authentication."

Cultural Incongruity And Social Status Ambiguity: The Experiences Of Evangelical Christian Student Leaders At Two Midwestern Public Universities, Dennis J. Lang, Jenea Oliver

This phenomenological investigation highlights the experiences of evangelical Christian student leaders at two Midwestern public universities. These students perceived their public university environments not only as incongruent with, but also as antagonistic and oppressive toward, their values, beliefs, and behaviors. Besides detailing how these students navigated their culturally incongruent environments, the authors introduce the concept of "social status ambiguity" to describe how differing perceptions of the religious identity of these students may result in the concurrent existence of the privileged and oppressed social statuses in that identity domain.
