Turning Challenges Into Gold: Cross-Listing Introductory Honors With Advanced Classes In The Visual Arts, Leda Cempellin

Leda Cempellin

Jim Lacey has offered an insight on the benefits of challenging courses for honors students: he prefers to think of an honors course not as a highly specialized, intensive-writing, and discipline-specific academic course but as the ideal general education course: “The courses themselves, I believe, should be challenging, different, and fun for instructors and students alike. When possible, they should be team taught and interdisciplinary; they should involve off-campus activities; and, instead of papers and exams, they should feature projects, preferably in teams” (79). During the early planning stages of the new course called Museum Experience at South Dakota State …

Peer Review Across Disciplines: Improving Student Performance In The Honors Humanities Classroom, Julie Barst, April Brooks, Leda Cempellin, Barb Kleinjan

Leda Cempellin

The term “peer review” often elicits a negative response from teachers and students alike. The process involves numerous challenges; anyone who has used the technique knows that students often feel awkward giving feedback to their peers and even more uncomfortable accepting the advice of peers in a classroom setting. They hesitate to voice negatives about performance, possibly because they doubt their own reaction to the material presented or fear that, in retaliation, they will be rated poorly as well. In addition, when teachers fail to establish and communicate clearly defined expectations, student authors do not produce high-quality drafts, and student …

Beth Rubin

This paper extends the research on the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework of understanding features of successful online learning to include the effects of the software used to support and facilitate it. This study examines how the Learning Management System (LMS) affords people the ability to take actions in an online course. A model is proposed to explain the effect of LMS affordances on the Community of Inquiry and on course satisfaction, and propose and test several hypotheses about their relationships. A pilot study found that while two common Learning Management Systems had different tools, faculty varied widely in their …

Authenticity In Academic Development: The Myth Of Neutrality, Gail Rathbun, Nancy Turner Jul 2012

Authenticity In Academic Development: The Myth Of Neutrality, Gail Rathbun, Nancy Turner

Gail A. Rathbun

Academic developers are often positioned as intermediaries who wield value-neutral tools—language, models, and techniques—in service of decidedly non-neutral institutional goals. We challenge the value of perpetuating the ideal of the neutrality of academic developers and their tools by examining the ways in which our resources and approaches produce imbalances of control, power, and authority in a consulting relationship. We suggest that the values embedded within the practices of academic development lead developers, and the people they help, to act inauthentically. By recognizing the improbability of neutrality in academic development work, the authors seek to open the way to constructive reflection, …

Student Activism And Curricular Change In Higher Education, Mikaila Arthur Jan 2011

Student Activism And Curricular Change In Higher Education, Mikaila Arthur

Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur

While higher education is still far from universal in the United States, it plays an increasingly large role in shaping our collective understanding of what knowledge counts as legitimate and important. Therefore, understanding the college curriculum and how it is changed and shaped helps us to understand the overall dynamics of knowledge in contemporary society. This book considers the emergence of three curricular fields that have developed and spread over the past half century in American higher education - Women's studies, Asian American studies and Queer/LGBT studies. It details the broader history of their development as knowledge fields and then …

Academic Readiness For College: The Role Of School Administrators, Chul Lee, Eunyoung Kim Dec 2009

Academic Readiness For College: The Role Of School Administrators, Chul Lee, Eunyoung Kim

Eunyoung Kim

The study utilized the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88) to identify which characteristics of academically effective high schools are key determinants of students' academic readiness for college. A multilevel analysis shows that high school characteristics affect student preparation for college in four core subject areas: reading, math, science, and history. In addition, prior academic achievement is the strongest predictor of academic readiness, followed by high school socioeconomic status and high school climate. Results indicate that students attending schools where academics are emphasized are more likely to succeed, suggesting a systematic link between student achievement and academic climate.

Assessment Strategies For Global Learning: Ii Case Studies, Meg O'Reilly, Kay Gibson, Deborah Gordon, Glyn Rimmington

Dr Meg O'Reilly

The processes of assessment have begun to take pride of place in considerations of online teaching and learning. As the technological means become more robust for bringing students together online, designs of various kinds of assessment tasks reflect greater reliance on the strategies of interaction, collaboration, cultural exchange and the use and creation of Web resources. Where students living in different countries study online, their sharing of culture and perspective and their development of communication skills can be considered as elements of global learning. Best practice in assessment of global learning outcomes is still emerging from action research, as described …

Enhancing Authentic Assessment Through Information Technology, Beth Rubin

Beth Rubin

This chapter provides a framework to analyze the opportunities to enhance authenticity when assessment is mediated by information technology (IT), as well as the limitations of IT mediation on authenticity. The potential degree of authenticity is determined by several aspects of the competence being assessed: the chronicity of access to and use of information; the durability of the display; the use of written, oral and non-verbal communication; and computer use. The framework is used to identify IT tools that enable more authentic assessment as well as sample approaches and limitations on authenticity.
