The Oppressive Ranking System: Issues For Black Undergraduate Students & Hbcus, Lynn Oberkehr

Theses and Dissertations

This quantitative study aims to address two areas related to the current research on Black college student experiences and college rankings. Second, after this data is analyzed, it will be utilized to determine which of the two campuses provided their Black students with a more positive student …

Evaluating Colleges And Universities: A New Model For Institutional Rankings, Lucien Robert Costley Mar 2015

Evaluating Colleges And Universities: A New Model For Institutional Rankings, Lucien Robert Costley

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

Most colleges and universities function independently and lack the wherewithal of measuring performance areas of effectiveness, efficiency or quality. The United States Department of Education maintain a number of subsidiary organizations and external sources that provide public statistical data for analysis, yet an institutional performance output measure has not been defined, created, nor developed. At best, university rankings (from sources such as US News and World Report) have been the main source of institutional performance for decades despite researchers’ attempts to address gaps within the higher education field. These sources remain limited within their methodology and may not truly …

Rankings In Institutional Strategies And Processes: Impact Or Illusion, Ellen Hazelkorn, Tia Loukkola, Thérèse Zhang

Reports

Higher education is undergoing rapid change in response to developments occurring at national and international level. Today, universities’ performance worldwide is increasingly being measured using rankings which have been developed by governmental and/or commercial agencies, at both national and international level. The Rankings in Institutional Strategies and Processes (RISP) project is the first pan-European study of the impact and influence of rankings on European higher education institutions. The project has sought to build understanding of how rankings impact and influence the development of institutional strategies and processes and its results are presented in the publication.

The 1995 Nrc Ratings Of Doctoral Programs: A Hedonic Model, Ronald Ehrenberg, Peter Hurst

Ronald G. Ehrenberg

We describe how one can use multivariate regression models and data collected by the National Research Council as part of its recent ranking of doctoral programs (Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States: Continuity and Change) to analyze how measures of program size, faculty seniority, faculty research productivity, and faculty productivity in producing doctoral degrees influence subjective ratings of doctoral programs in 35 academic fields. Using data for one of the fields, economics, we illustrate how university administrators can use the models to compute the impact of changing the number of faculty positions they allocate to the field on …

The Impact Of U.S. News & World Report College Rankings On Admissions Outcomes And Pricing Policies At Selective Private Institutions, James Monks, Ronald G. Ehrenberg Nov 2012

The Impact Of U.S. News & World Report College Rankings On Admissions Outcomes And Pricing Policies At Selective Private Institutions, James Monks, Ronald G. Ehrenberg

Ronald G. Ehrenberg

Despite the widespread popularity of the U.S. News & World Report College rankings there has been no empirical analysis of the impact of these rankings on applications, admissions, and enrollment decisions, as well as on institutions' pricing policies. Our analyses indicate that a less favorable rank leads an institution to accept a greater percentage of its applicants, a smaller percentage of its admitted applicants matriculate, and the resulting entering class is of lower quality, as measured by its average SAT scores. While tuition levels are not responsive to less favorable rankings, institutions offer less visible price discounts in the form …
