Undergraduate And Graduate Students’ Retrospective Perception Of Flipped Learning In Dietetics Curricula, Rachel L. Vollmer, Teresa Drake
Undergraduate And Graduate Students’ Retrospective Perception Of Flipped Learning In Dietetics Curricula, Rachel L. Vollmer, Teresa Drake
Journal of Dietetic Education
Most studies investigating flipped learning fail to assess how student perceptions of flipped learning may change once the class is complete, and students have a chance to reflect on the experience. Follow-up studies are needed to evaluate the sustainability of the benefits from flipped learning among students and how they feel it prepares them, if at all, for future classes and/or their professional lives. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore how graduate and undergraduate dietetics students retrospectively perceive a course that used flipped learning 2 years after they completed the course. Two focus groups with undergraduate (n=5) …

Student Parenting: Mastering The Double Life, Miriam T. Mukurazita
The Vermont Connection
It is okay, beautiful, and brave to be different and take a different path as long as your own dreams and goals are being fulfilled. As virtual learning and online classes are becoming more popular, more students are realizing they can have the best of both worlds, that is, further their education while fulfilling family obligations.
The student parent life is a different journey with its own unique challenges and blessings. Happiness is personal and comes from within, and can be in the form of being a parent and seeing one's own child grow while pursuing academic and career growth. …

Faculty Leadership Practices In Graduate Hybrid Education, Weina Li Chen
Faculty Leadership Practices In Graduate Hybrid Education, Weina Li Chen
Theses and Dissertations
Hybrid education is an instructional delivery format that includes both online learning and traditional classroom learning and is often seen as the best of two worlds. It is one of the fastest-growing trends in higher education because of its countless educational benefits. Studies reviewed about hybrid learning focused on various areas, including student engagement, student attitudes, faculty experiences, learning effectiveness, and supporting technology tools. However, a review of the literature revealed scant studies focused on faculty leadership, especially graduate-level education faculty's leadership strategies and their influence on teaching. Faculty leadership is a critical component that is directly related to effective …

The Attracting Intelligent Minds Conference: An Assessment Of Graduate Diversity Recruitment, Alfred T. Dowe
The Attracting Intelligent Minds Conference: An Assessment Of Graduate Diversity Recruitment, Alfred T. Dowe
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Graduate student recruitment is one of the most important factors in growing university enrollment. Unlike undergraduate recruitment, graduate recruitment is a coordinated effort facilitated between graduate faculty and program coordinators and graduate recruiters who often work outside of the department. An essential element in graduate recruitment is the effectiveness with which underrepresented minorities are identified and recruited. Graduate schools are commonly using initiatives known as intervention strategies to help enhance their traditional recruitment strategies and campus visitation programs have become a popular recruitment tool within those strategies.
Since the 1990’s, the University of Arkansas (UA) has employed various intervention strategies …
Q&A: A Career In Christian Higher Education: An Interview, Linda Gray
Q&A: A Career In Christian Higher Education: An Interview, Linda Gray
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
Much has changed in U.S. culture since the 1970s, requiring teachers to adjust their methods of reaching students who are markedly different from their parents’ generation. But through the decades, Christian educators have tried to demonstrate God’s love through caring, patience, knowledge, and commitment, and in a Christian institution, they also seek to bring a Christian worldview to their students. But if some students at Christian universities are not believers nor seekers and when students lack basic biblical knowledge, teachers in Christian institutions must adjust their teaching methods. Online teaching creates even more challenges as students and teachers can see …

Getting It Published: Transforming The Publishing Activities Of Stem Graduate Students Through A Collaborative Workshop Series, Brittany Wofford, Sarah Park
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
Writing and publishing are essential activities for young researchers, yet many newly arrived graduate students struggle to learn both foundational writing skills and the knowledge necessary to navigate an increasingly complex publishing landscape. To help students make informed decisions through their writing publishing journey, science and engineering librarians at Duke University Libraries partnered with the Pratt School of Engineering in summer 2019 to organize a series of workshops on the publishing life cycle for STEM graduate students. This collaboration was especially unique as it was the first time that the library has collaborated with a school to share expertise with …

Mucp 183-983: Applied Music Composition--A Course Benchmark Portfolio, Gregory Simon
Mucp 183-983: Applied Music Composition--A Course Benchmark Portfolio, Gregory Simon
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
MUCP 183-983, Applied Music Composition, is the core of the music composition course curriculum for students at all levels, from freshman to doctoral candidate. Like all applied lesson environments, it is a one-on-one, individualized study that principally involves the instructor giving students feedback on their musical works-in-progress. This time-honored paradigm for teaching composition has produced brilliant artists, but is rife with pitfalls and traps that can tarnish a student’s growth: composition pedagogues can coerce students into writing music like their teachers, or can prescribe a curriculum that makes composition accessible only to students who have already played classical music for …
The Patient As Mentor: Transformative Experience In An Occupational Therapy Course, Meagan Troop, Anne O'Riordan
The Patient As Mentor: Transformative Experience In An Occupational Therapy Course, Meagan Troop, Anne O'Riordan
Publications and Scholarship
“The Lived Experience of Disability” course matches first year occupational therapy students with mentors, individuals with health challenges, for a series of community visits. This learning relationship facilitates students’ understanding of disability and client-centred practice. Mentors share expertise of their lived experience; students consider personal attitudes, assumptions and knowledge of disability and their future client-therapist relationships. Findings of a qualitative research study using a case study approach reveal that students engaged in interactive course components that comprised reflective practice, mentor visits, and critical involvement in a community of practice. These experiential and collaborative interactions provided pedagogical conditions for building relational …
