Economics Of Higher Education Productivity, Uchenna K. Oparah

How does spending affect academic outcomes in higher education institutions? Postsecondary schools incur costs to provide services to its student body. In this study, I introduce multiple outcome variables, a two-stage production function, and current-year expenditures on core services to evaluate how school spending affects academic outcomes.

The empirical analysis includes 28 group sample parameter estimates from four outcome variables, the pooled sample, and group samples for each of six sectors. The fixed effects/instrumental variable (FE-IV) instructional expenditure parameter estimates were positive for 20 of the 28 group samples. Economic Contribution Of Colleges And Universities In Maine, Megan Bailey, Andrew Crawley, Todd Gabe

Maine has 38 colleges and universities that educate 72,605 students, employ a combined 14,621 nonstudent workers, and generate about $2.2 billion in annual revenue.

Colleges and universities in Maine generate a total annual economic contribution—including the spending of students and visitors, and multiplier effects—of an estimated $4.5 billion in output, 31,267 full- and part-time jobs, and $1.7 billion in labor income.

Maine’s colleges and universities support at least ten jobs in 125 Maine sectors, and there are statewide employment impacts of twenty jobs or more in 108 industries.

Many students consider mathematics too abstract and useless for their academic and career goals. Meanwhile, instructors in quantitative disciplines such as economics find many students mathematically underprepared for their courses. The disconnect between students’ perceptions of the utility of mathematics and their life and career may have contributed to some of the under-performance in learning mathematics.
