Theoretical perspectives on research in higher and professional education
Invited Panel for Higher & Professional Education SIG, 2013 AARE Conference, Adelaide
Alisa Percy (University of Wollongong); Steven Hodge (Deakin University) and Jessica Gerrard (The University of Melbourne)
Much of the literature in higher and professional education remains under-theorised. The AARE Higher and Professional Education SIG is committed to enhancing the theoretical profile of research in the post-compulsory education sector and in AARE generally. In addition, a number of key educational theorists in the AARE community will soon be retiring and it is vital to create spaces for early career researchers …

Connecting To “Get Things Done”: A Grounded Theory Study Of Bias Response Teams, Lucy Lepeau, Demetri Morgan, Hilary Zimmerman, J.T. Snipes, Beth Marcotte Nov 2013

Connecting To “Get Things Done”: A Grounded Theory Study Of Bias Response Teams, Lucy Lepeau, Demetri Morgan, Hilary Zimmerman, J.T. Snipes, Beth Marcotte

Demetri L. Morgan

As college campuses become increasingly diverse (Anderson, 2003), institutions have been pushed to create safe and educationally supportive environments for an array of students (Harper, Patton, Wooden, 2009; Bauman, Bustillos, Bensimon, Brown, Bartee, 2005). Little is known about how institutions have come to respond to the, at times hostile, interactions between students, staff, and organizations on college campuses. One way institutions have responded is with the creation of bias response teams which bring together campus professionals and faculty from different departments to address reported incidents as a result of these interactions. This grounded theory study aims to investigate the process …

Iowa Moves To All Living Learning Communities, Von Stange Ed.D. Oct 2013

Iowa Moves To All Living Learning Communities, Von Stange Ed.D.

Von Stange, Ed.D.

Living on campus at the University of Iowa has become an educational hallmark of the student experience. In July 2012, Iowa began the process of implementing a campus-wide Living Learning Community (LLC) initiative. This workshop will examine the changes undergone to make the transition from 14 to 32 LLCs in less than a year’s time. Join representatives from the UH&D team as we discuss the successes and challenges of this campus culture change and share best practices in staffing, programming, funding, assignments, and collaborations. Presented with Becky Wilson, Josh Atcher, and Linda Varvel from the University of Iowa.

Public School Religion Education And The 'Hot Potato' Of Religious Diversity, Cathy Byrne Oct 2013

Public School Religion Education And The 'Hot Potato' Of Religious Diversity, Cathy Byrne

Dr Cathy Byrne

Religiously marked intercultural conflict is on the rise in Australia (HREOC, 2007; Dreher, 2006). In addition, intolerant and religiously discriminating sentiment has re-emerged in Australia's debate on migration (Schech & Haggis, 2001; Cratchley, 2007). However, inter-religious education as a remedy is not a high priority. Independent and governmental reviews recommend intercultural and interfaith education to address ignorance and intolerance (Erebus, 2006; HREOC, 2004). Australia appears more focused on the development of values and citizenship courses which assume shared heritage and promote uniformity ( Halafoff, 2006). In public education, religious diversity is a 'hot potato' — no one wants to touch …

“There's No Participation In ‘Our’ Participatory-Action Research Project”: Overcoming Hierarchies In Service-Learning Partnerships, Julia Van Der Ryn, Omar Carrera Sep 2013

“There's No Participation In ‘Our’ Participatory-Action Research Project”: Overcoming Hierarchies In Service-Learning Partnerships, Julia Van Der Ryn, Omar Carrera

Julia van der Ryn

While strategic planning is widely recognized as a central component in the development of sustainable service-learning partnerships and university programs, institutions working to create organizational change often do not have a framework for how to address the power differentials among a diverse group of constituencies. Further, this framework should include all stakeholders in the analysis of the social, historical, and political contexts around service-learning partnerships.

In this study, participants in the service-learning program at Dominican University of California (DUC) explored the complexity of the social forces that influence communication and collaboration in service-learning. DUC faculty members designed a multiphase research …

Do The Guiding Principles Help Or Hinder Our Assessment & Development Of Students’ Understanding & Use Of English?, Emily Purser, Alisa Percy Jun 2013

Do The Guiding Principles Help Or Hinder Our Assessment & Development Of Students’ Understanding & Use Of English?, Emily Purser, Alisa Percy

Alisa Percy, PhD

As universities articulate their strategy for improving students’ English language ‘proficiency’, the need for principled guidelines to direct English language education programming is high. Institutions, and ALL educators, have to comply with various educational policies which make reference to constructs such as ELP, ‘communication skills’ and academic ‘literacies’. The interpretation and implementation of these in relation to ALL teaching and disciplinary curriculum development seem largely to be occurring in separate spaces, as though the problems are self-evidently separate, and bounded by different concerns and practices. Do these principles assist in developing a coherent and effective approach to English language education …

Learning Content / Teaching Language, Emily Purser, Alisa Percy May 2013

Learning Content / Teaching Language, Emily Purser, Alisa Percy

Alisa Percy, PhD

English language teaching in universities is shaped in complex ways by the internationalization of higher education, student mobility and technological development. Within and around English medium universities, educational programs have to respond to changing national, institutional and departmental level understandings of students’ learning needs. In Australia, lecturers across the academic disciplines face, in classrooms and online, a high proportion of students who enter into disciplinary studies before they are quite proficient in the language of instruction – and institutions are required to demonstrate to the national education quality and standards agency (TEQSA) that they are helping international students to develop …

Quasi-Experiment Examining Cafeteria-Style Grading In Social Work Education, Brandon Youker, Lyza Ingraham May 2013

Quasi-Experiment Examining Cafeteria-Style Grading In Social Work Education, Brandon Youker, Lyza Ingraham

Brandon W. Youker Ph.D

Cafeteria-style grading system is an individualized student assessment method whereby students choose their assignments from an expansive and diverse pool of assignments. In this study, students are non-randomly assigned to two sections of the same social work course. The first section received cafeteria-style assignments and grading system (i.e., experimental group) while the comparison section received the traditional method of grading. Students in both sections video record a demonstration exercise; the recordings are reviewed and scored by experts from a panel of social work professors. Preliminary results show an effect on student attendance but no effect on GPA or student performance.

Big History As A Core Component Of Liberal Education, Mojgan Behmand Dec 2012

Big History As A Core Component Of Liberal Education, Mojgan Behmand

Mojgan Behmand

In 2010,Dominican University of California launched a one-year program based on Big History for all its incoming first-year students. The adoption of Big History and the ensuing curricular design were guided by the principles set forth by the Association of American Colleges and Universities regarding the outcomes of a 21st century liberal education. With the support of the university leadership and the faculty,a faculty learning community was formed which applied the principles of backward design to articulate program goals, write course descriptions, and collaborate on pedagogy and assessment. The collaborative work of this faculty learning community has become a living example of …
