Examining The Impact Of Gender, Caretaking On Faculty Research Productivity, Tenure And Promotion Progress During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Erin O'Mara Kunz, Corinne Brion, Hannah Kessler, Eden Michelson

Reports from the Gender Equity Research Fellowship

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the working and home lives of faculty. The largest impact was felt by women and caregivers, who suffered a staggering setback to their research productivity throughout the pandemic, and declines in research productivity have negative downstream consequences for tenure and promotion. The current research sought to examine gender and caregiving differences in research productivity throughout the COVID-19 pandemic among University of Dayton faculty. In two primary studies, research-active faculty were surveyed (Study 1) and interviewed (Study 2) to better understand the impact of gender and caregiving on research productivity during the pandemic. Study 1 …

Creating And Celebrating Honors Faculty, Lynne C. Elkes Jan 2023

Creating And Celebrating Honors Faculty, Lynne C. Elkes

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Honors faculty are defined by their dedication to their craft and their enormous impact on students in every discipline. However, their role within the larger university setting is nebulous, leading to an undervaluation of their contributions to higher education in an era of negative perceptions of the industry. Honors faculty can be tenured, contingent, academic, or professors of the practice; in every case, questions of promotion, compensation, and teaching assignments make staffing an honors program in a consistent manner difficult at best. These programs, their students, and their faculty would benefit from a more standardized approach to effectively serve honors …

Academic Prioritization Or Killing The Liberal Arts?, Reshmi Dutt-Ballerstadt

Faculty Publications

Dr. Reshmi Dutt-Ballerstadt, professor of English at Linfield College, laments the downsizing of liberal arts and humanities programs and departments by college administrators bent on promoting more "job-oriented" disciplines.

This essay originally appeared as part of Conditionally Accepted, a career advice blog for Inside Higher Ed providing news, information, personal stories, and resources for scholars who are, at best, conditionally accepted in academe. The Poor And Marginalized Among Us: Contingent Faculty In Jesuit Universities, Christina Pawls, Richard D. Clark, Carrie Buchanan Jan 2018

The Poor And Marginalized Among Us: Contingent Faculty In Jesuit Universities, Christina Pawls, Richard D. Clark, Carrie Buchanan

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Faculty of institutions of higher learning have an opportunity to discuss, debate, and discern how to create workplaces that are just and inclusive. As members of Jesuit institutions, wehave a moral obligation to do so. How, then, can Jesuit universities justify the poor treatment of contingent faculty, who are now a majority not just in our institutions but in the country as a whole? Tenure-track employment is a fading tradition in universities throughout the United States. The data also show that non-tenure-track faculty, particularly the growing number of part-time adjunct faculty, constitute a population of marginalized, often poor, employees working alongside more privileged …

Tenure Redux, Jacqueline D. Lipton Jan 2018

Tenure Redux, Jacqueline D. Lipton

Articles

This essay is a reflection on some of the questions that arose during the author's tenure process that are likely pertinent to others on the tenure track today particularly with respect to questions about writing style in tenure pieces, and on whether early scholars should focus on general law reviews or specialty journals--depending on their areas of expertise--or a combination of both. It also reflects on choice of subject matter for tenure work, and whether some of that work may or may not stand the test of time, as well as on differences between the U.S. legal scholarship process and …

Continuing Derrick Bell's Devotion In Creative Action, Angela Mae Kupenda

Journal Articles

I remember my first time seeing Derrick Bell in person and hearing him speak, just a few years before he passed away. I was in awe of him for many reasons, but primarily for two reasons. First, I noted from watching him with his devoted students, how mutual was the devotion coming from him—devotion to them as people and as those who would surely carry on his great work of seeking to forge equality in America and beyond. And second, I was in awe of him because of his devotion to the elimination of racism, while at the same time …

Evaluates faculty members for continuous appointment, guides tenure decisions Full-time faculty members ore evaluated for annual review only. Tenure-track faculty members ore evaluated for both annual review and reappointment review.

The Importance Of Establishing Standards To Help Faculty Navigate The Tenure And Promotion Process, Gordon Flanders, Tim Kober Oct 2015

The Importance Of Establishing Standards To Help Faculty Navigate The Tenure And Promotion Process, Gordon Flanders, Tim Kober

Business & Information Technology

The Department of Business at Montana Tech was required to draft a new set of standards for the promotion and tenure decisions for its faculty. Montana Tech, a small comprehensive university, had employed a campus-wide set of standards that were used for faculty members in all departments on the campus. The purpose of this paper is to identify the process used by the Business Department as they set their specific standards and to help those on the tenure-track to learn how to keep score and to argue for the importance of establishing standards by which tenure-track faculty will be measured.

Podia And Pens: Dismantling The Two-Track System For Legal Research And Writing Faculty, Kristen K. Tiscione, Amy Vorenberg

Law Faculty Scholarship

At the 2015 AALS Annual Meeting, a panel was convened under this title to discuss whether separate tracks and lower status for legal research and writing (“LRW”) faculty make sense given the current demand for legal educators to better train students for practice. The participants included law professors, an associate dean, and a federal judge.2 Each panelist was asked to respond to questions about the “two-track” system—a shorthand phrase for the two tracks of employment at many law schools whereby full-time LRW faculty are treated differently than tenured and tenure-track faculty. The panelists represented differing views on the topic. This …

The Parlous State Of Academia: When Politics, Prestige And Proxies Overtake Higher Education's Teaching Mission, Viviane Callier, Richard H. Singiser, Nathan L. Vanderford Jan 2015

The Parlous State Of Academia: When Politics, Prestige And Proxies Overtake Higher Education's Teaching Mission, Viviane Callier, Richard H. Singiser, Nathan L. Vanderford

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

Original and significant research benefits the careers of those running universities and brings prestige to their institution. World class teaching, by and large, does not, and this has important consequences for higher education's tripartite mission. Most notably, emphasis on the research mission of major higher education institutions dwarfs that of the teaching mission and this is to the detriment of teachers and students. Policy interventions are needed to address this discrepancy.

Reforming Gendered Tenure Policies In U.S. Higher Education: A Policy Recommendation, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D., Abigail Johnson, Laura Poglitsch Apr 2014

Reforming Gendered Tenure Policies In U.S. Higher Education: A Policy Recommendation, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D., Abigail Johnson, Laura Poglitsch

Executives, Administrators, & Staff Publications

Men receive tenure more often than women in United States higher education. One reason may be due to current tenure policies. Within this article, the authors evaluate three policy alternatives—benefits packages targeting women, a three-track tenure process, and support programs—using the evaluative criteria effectiveness, affordability, administrative operability, and political feasibility to determine which alternative might be the best option for decreasing the tenure gap between men and women. Each policy alternative was assessed and ranked based on the outcomes associated with the identified criteria. The authors conclude by recommending the three-track tenure policy and suggesting ways to implement and evaluate …

Tenure For Teaching Intensive Appointments At Portland State University: A Green Paper For The College Of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Patricia A. Schechter Oct 2013

Tenure For Teaching Intensive Appointments At Portland State University: A Green Paper For The College Of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Patricia A. Schechter

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper explores alignment between 2012-13 CLAS visioning and planning reports and state and national trends around faculty mix in higher education. It argues for pursuing the instructional excellence highlighted in many of the CLAS reports by investing in tenure. Tenure anchors authentic academic freedom through robust peer review and shared governance, the pillars of academic life. Tenure also provides the tested and proven means for providing a faculty stability, professional development, and an appropriate reward structure. This paper recommends expanded pathways to tenure, particularly for teaching intensive appointments traditionally described as "full-time fixed-term" at Portland State University. This adjustment …

A Survey Of Accounting Faculty Perceptions Regarding Tenure And Post-Tenure Review, James H. Thompson Jan 2012

A Survey Of Accounting Faculty Perceptions Regarding Tenure And Post-Tenure Review, James H. Thompson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

Attaining tenure is a goal of every faculty member. Indeed, at the beginning of every faculty member’s career, there is concern regarding the process of earning tenure. Many factors enter into the tenure decision, but most universities place weight on three primary factors: teaching effectiveness, research activity, and demonstration of service to the university and beyond. The relative importance of these three factors varies, but most universities expect “satisfactory” performance in all three areas. One of the historical reasons for faculty tenure is to protect academic freedom. Once tenure was attained, a faculty member’s academic freedom was considered safe. Recent …

Publish Or Perish: A Dilemma For Academic Librarians?, W. Bede Mitchell, Mary Reichel May 1999

Publish Or Perish: A Dilemma For Academic Librarians?, W. Bede Mitchell, Mary Reichel

Library Faculty Publications

This study examines the influence of scholarly requirements on librarians’ ability to earn tenure or continuous employment. After a literature review, the authors present the results of a survey of research, doctoral, and master’s-level institutions. Of the 690 responding institutions, 54.3 percent employ tenure-track librarians. Of these, more than 60 percent require some scholarship and 34.6 percent encourage it. At these 374 institutions, 92.2 percent of librarians who underwent tenure review during a three-year period were approved. The authors summarize survey information on librarians not granted tenure as well as those believed by directors to have resigned to avoid tenure …

The Indentured Servants Of Academia: The Adjunct Faculty Dilemma And Their Limited Legal Remedies, John C. Duncan, Jr. Jan 1999

The Indentured Servants Of Academia: The Adjunct Faculty Dilemma And Their Limited Legal Remedies, John C. Duncan, Jr.

Journal Publications

In this half of the twentieth century, the academic equivalent of the indentured servant is the adjunct faculty member in higher education. Adjuncts cannot say or do much about their plight. The dilemma of adjunct faculty leads to what should be considered a violation of due process rights. This Article first examines who are the adjunct faculty, what are their dilemmas, and how are they viewed in the academic world. The heart of the paper then explores the limited legal remedies available. The essential problems of lack of due process and minimal protection through collective bargaining and contractual agreements are …

Publication Requirements And Tenure Approval Rates: An Issue For Academic Librarians, W. Bede Mitchell, L. Stanislava Swieszkowski May 1985

Publication Requirements And Tenure Approval Rates: An Issue For Academic Librarians, W. Bede Mitchell, L. Stanislava Swieszkowski

Library Faculty Publications

One hundred and thirty-eight members of the Center for Research Libraries responded to a survey designed to test the hypothesis that where tenure-track librarians are required to do research and publish, an inadequate research and publication record would be the most frequent cause for the rejection of the librarians' tenure applications. The hypothesis proved valid, but only for a small percentage of the librarians. The study revealed a generally high tenure approval rate (81.5 percent) for academic librarians compared to the national average for other academic faculty (58 percent).
