Commuter Students Using Technology, Mariana Regalado, Maura A. Smale
Publications and Research
- A multi-year qualitative study of undergraduates at six colleges at the City University of New York focused on how, where, and when students accomplished their academic work and how the presence or absence of access to technology helped and hindered them.
- CUNY students have an average commute time of 45–60 minutes each way and typically use public transportation, making commuting a defining feature of undergraduate life at CUNY that offers both opportunities and challenges.
- The study sought to understand how students made time and found space to do their schoolwork outside of class, including their use of technology for coursework. …

The Create Strategy For Intensive Analysis Of Primary Literature Can Be Used Effectively By Newly Trained Faculty To Produce Multiple Gains In Diverse Students, Leslie M. Stevens, Sally G. Hoskins
Publications and Research
The CREATE (Consider Read, Elucidate the hypotheses, Analyze and interpret the data, and Think of the next Experiment) strategy aims to demystify scientific research and scientists while building critical thinking, reading/analytical skills, and improved science attitudes through intensive analysis of primary literature. CREATE was developed and piloted at the City College of New York (CCNY), a 4-yr, minority-serving institution, with both upper-level biology majors and first-year students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. To test the extent to which CREATE strategies are broadly applicable to students at private, public, research-intensive, and/or primarily undergraduate colleges/universities, we trained a cohort of …
An Examination Of Embedded Librarian Ideas And Practices: A Critical Bibliography., Carl R. Andrews
An Examination Of Embedded Librarian Ideas And Practices: A Critical Bibliography., Carl R. Andrews
Publications and Research
Although this annotated bibliography is primarily targeted to library science professionals in an academic setting, the literature examined can very easily support secondary and college level general education teaching initiatives. The majority of the literature examined in the list comes from journal articles. The author focused primarily on actual case studies that take place in an undergraduate academic setting. Attention was paid to community colleges and schools where there are students in need of remediation. The author was also interested in seeking out literature that addressed the needs of student academic success after an embedded program was implemented. Non-traditional embedded …
Transition From Concepts To Practical Skills In Computer Programming Courses: Factor And Cluster Analysis, Candido Cabo
Transition From Concepts To Practical Skills In Computer Programming Courses: Factor And Cluster Analysis, Candido Cabo
Publications and Research
Computer programming courses are gateway courses with low passing grades, which may result in student attrition and transfers out of engineering and computer science degrees. Barriers to success include a good understanding of programming concepts and the ability to apply those concepts to write viable computer programs. In this paper, we analyze the determinants of the transition from concepts to skills in computer programming courses using factor and cluster analysis. The purpose of this study is to answer the following questions related to computer programming teaching and learning: 1) Which are the correlations and interdependencies in student understanding of different …
Teaching Writing In The Context Of A National Digital Literacy Narrative, Kelly S. Bradbury
Teaching Writing In The Context Of A National Digital Literacy Narrative, Kelly S. Bradbury
Publications and Research
Despite commitments by composition studies and English education to using technology in the writing classroom and to developing teachers’ “critical technological literacy” (Selfe, 1999), not much has been written about how graduate programs can help secondary English teachers develop their own critical perspective on digital literacy and on teaching with technology. Recognizing this gap in scholarship, I created a series of assignments (The National Digital Literacy Narrative Project) to engage aspiring secondary English teachers in critical considerations of how public rhetoric about technology and literacy complicates composition studies scholarship and the contexts in which they will teach.
This article analyzes …
How Cuny Students Create And Negotiate Learning Spaces, Maura A. Smale, Mariana Regalado
How Cuny Students Create And Negotiate Learning Spaces, Maura A. Smale, Mariana Regalado
Publications and Research
As commuters CUNY undergraduates employ various strategies to find time and space to be students. While students’ constraints may be invisible to faculty and staff, they may affect engagement in students’ academic work. We interviewed CUNY students to learn how they study in various locations. Knowledge of the student experience outside the classroom can inform strategies to increase student success.

An Overview Of Undergraduate Research In The Cuny Community College System, Avrom J. Caplan, Effie S. Maclachlan Phd
Publications and Research
CUNY community colleges occupy a unique niche because they are part of a larger geographically focused university system in which all faculty members are governed by a single set of standards for professional development. Research is clearly a part of the wider institutional culture, and dedicated faculty members who obtained support from state and federal funding agencies have conducted successful student-research programs. Close partnerships between community colleges and their four-year counterparts can contribute to positive student outcomes and to the subsequent transfer of students. The main roadblock to broadening participation is the small number of students who can be supported …

Engaging large numbers of undergraduates in authentic scientific discovery is desirable but difficult to achieve. We have developed a general model in which faculty and teaching assistants from diverse academic institutions are trained to teach a research course for first-year undergraduate students focused on bacteriophage discovery and genomics. The course is situated within a broader scientific context aimed at understanding viral diversity, such that faculty and students are collaborators with established researchers in the field. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Science Education Alliance Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) course has been widely implemented and has been …
Google Vs. The Library (Part Ii): Student Search Patterns And Behaviors When Using Google And A Federated Search Tool, Helen Georgas
Google Vs. The Library (Part Ii): Student Search Patterns And Behaviors When Using Google And A Federated Search Tool, Helen Georgas
Publications and Research
This study examines the information-seeking behavior of undergraduate students within a research context. Student searches were recorded while the participants used Google and a library (federated) search tool to find sources (one book, two articles, and one other source of their choosing) for a selected topic. The undergraduates in this study believed themselves to be skilled researchers, but their search queries and behaviors did not support this belief. Students did not examine their topics to identify keywords and related terms. They relied heavily on the language presented to them via the list of research topics and performed natural language or …

The Promising Role Of Hybrid Learning In Community Colleges: Looking Towards The Future, Corinne Crawford, Joel Barker, Achraf A. Seyam
Publications and Research
In 2014, community colleges are overcrowded, underfunded, and serve a diverse population. Community colleges are looking for innovative ways to meet the growing demands of their nontraditional student body on a shrinking budget. Increasing their online offerings appeared to be a perfect solution. Unfortunately, research has shown that community college students do not fare well in online classes. However, the same research shows that community college students do as well in hybrid classes as they do in face-to-face classes.
Hybrid classes are a mix of online and face-to-face instruction. Although hybrid classes are not as flexible as online courses and …

Disciplinarity And Trandisciplinarity In The Study Of Knowledge, Jay H. Bernstein
Disciplinarity And Trandisciplinarity In The Study Of Knowledge, Jay H. Bernstein
Publications and Research
Scholarly inquiry about the nature and significance of knowledge has been shaped by disciplinary traditions and priorities that define “knowledge” differently and result in disconnected literatures. In the mid to late twentieth century, library science educator Jesse Shera sought to bridge the conceptual gap between epistemological and sociological approaches to knowledge in proposing a new discipline he called social epistemology. Around the same time, long-term projects by the economist Fritz Machlup and the physical chemist turned philosopher of science Michael Polanyi did not merely combine existing disciplinary approaches but transcended conventional frameworks for conceptualizing knowledge. These scholars can be viewed …

Librarians in the City University of New York system have held faculty ranks since 1965, but their faculty status dates back two decades further. How did they achieve faculty status and faculty ranks? What role did their professional association (LACCNY, later known as LACUNY) play? Is their status secure?
