James Norris Hart was dean emeritus of the University of Maine and professor emeritus of mathematics and astronomy. He was born in Willimantic, Maine, in 1861 and died in 1959. He received a B.C.E. degree from the Maine State College in 1885 and a C.E. in 1890. In 1897 he earned a M.S. degree from the University of Chicago.

Hart was an instructor in mathematics at the University of Maine starting in 1887 and dean of the University in 1903. Hart was awarded for his service to the University of Maine with a degree of doctor of science in 1908. …

The University of Maine's Division of Lifelong Learning (DLL) was established effective July 1, 1996, under the directorship of Robert (Bob) C. White, who would later be appointed associate provost and dean of the Division. The Division had responsibility for providing leadership in lifelong learning including: formal academic course work; matriculation toward a non-traditional degree (Bachelor of University Studies); and non-degree institutes, seminars, workshops, symposia, and courses. The honors society in home economics Omicron Nu was formed at the Michigan State College in April 1912. The Alpha Beta Chapter of Omicron Nu was established at the University of Maine on April 9, 1931, by National President, Dean Margaret M. Justin, of Kansas State College. Among the 11 charter members were Mildred Brown Schrumpf. The objective of the society was to recognize and promote scholarship, leadership, and research in the field of Human Economics. The University of Maine Honors Program began in 1935 and transitioned into the Honors College in 2002. In 2002, the Honors College relocated from the original Robert Thomson Honors Center, constructed in 1975, to the newly renovated Center on the first floor of Colvin Hall. The Center had been named in honor of Robert B. Thomson in 1983. Thomson was the director of the Honors Program from 1962-1977. The first director of the Honors College was Charles (Charlie) Slavin, who passed suddenly on July 30, 2012. The Charlie Slavin Research Fund was established in 2012 and a terrace honoring him …
