Before the 1800s, no schools of pharmacy existed in the United States, and most doctors served as their own pharmacists. The mid-nineteenth century saw many changes to the medical and pharmacy professions. Better Service to a Larger Public provides a brief history of early pharmacies and the School of Pharmacy at the Medical College of Virginia.
