Freemont Russell was born on the 13 June 1862 in West Paris, Oxford County, Maine. Freemont graduated from the Maine State College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts (now the University of Maine) as a member of the Class of 1885 and earned a Doctor of Veterinary Science at John Hopkins University. He served as professor of Bacteriology & Veterinary Science at the University of Maine from 1889-1932. Freemont married Marcia Etta Sampson in 1890 and had 5 children: Luther, Mary, Sibyl, Ascendath, and Doris all born in Orono 1891-1896. The Bureau of Labor Education (BLE) at the University of Maine is a state-funded department of research and advocacy for Maine laborers and their issues. First established in 1966 by the Maine Legislature, the original aim of the Bureau was to foster education about the history and current issues of labor in today's techno-capitalist society, as well as advocate on behalf of labor. The Bureau teaches courses in Labor studies, contributes to and facilitates publications in labor studies and economics, and has retained robust relationships with some of Maine's most important labor allies, like Maine AFL-CIO. The Nelson B. Jones Stein Collection is on display in the Oakes Room at Raymond H. Fogler Library. The theme of steins is inspired by the popularity of the Maine Stein song made famous by the singer Rudy Vallee.

In May of 1962, the Governing Board of the Memorial Union, with the urging of Nelson B. Jones, the first director of the Memorial Union, formally authorized the creation of the permanent stein collection, which in 1977 was renamed the Nelson B. Jones Stein Collection. The collection was originally housed in the Memorial Union before being relocated to Fogler Library.

James Norris Hart was dean emeritus of the University of Maine and professor emeritus of mathematics and astronomy. He was born in Willimantic, Maine, in 1861 and died in 1959. He received a B.C.E. degree from the Maine State College in 1885 and a C.E. in 1890. In 1897 he earned a M.S. degree from the University of Chicago.

Hart was an instructor in mathematics at the University of Maine starting in 1887 and dean of the University in 1903. Hart was awarded for his service to the University of Maine with a degree of doctor of science in 1908. …

The University of Maine Honors Program began in 1935 and transitioned into the Honors College in 2002. In 2002, the Honors College relocated from the original Robert Thomson Honors Center, constructed in 1975, to the newly renovated Center on the first floor of Colvin Hall. The Center had been named in honor of Robert B. Thomson in 1983. Thomson was the director of the Honors Program from 1962-1977. Howard (Ph.D., Boston University, 1981; M.A., Boston University, 1977; B.A., University of Chicago, 1974) came to the University of Maine in 1981 as an assistant professor of Philosophy and went on to chair the department from 1993-1998 and from 2008-2009. Howard Paul Segal was born on July 15, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Princeton University. Segal first came to the University of Maine in 1986 as an assistant professor of history and also the associate director of the Technology and Society Project in the College of Engineering. In 2020, Segal was awarded emeritus status by the University of Maine.

Karen Sieber Speaks About Hidden History Of Violence At Umaine, Megan Ashe

On Tuesday Dec. 1, 2020, Karen Sieber, the Humanities Specialist at the Clement and Linda McGillicuddy Humanities Center, presented a talk called “Tarred and Feathered: UMaine’s Hidden Connection to the Red Summer of 1919.” The Red Summer occurred during the year of 1919 and was in reference to nationwide widespreadviolence against Black people, but particularly Black men. Sieber is a historian and specializes in both public history and the digital humanities. This experiencecombined with her own thirst for knowledge led her to begin to create an archive to document this time in history after a trip to Knoxville, Tennessee.
