The Division of Music in Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Performing Arts presents the Ouachita Choirs Worship Concert on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m. on the front steps of Evans Student Center. A relatively new event for Ouachita, the performance is a time for music students to lead the student body in contemporary choral worship.

The Division of Music in Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will host Dr. Natilan Crutcher in concert on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public.

Crutcher, visiting assistant professor of music at Ouachita, said she will perform a selection of sacred and spiritual songs – some obscure, some familiar – by some of the country’s most influential African American composers and arrangers.

The Rosemary Gossett Adams Department of Art & Design in Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts is hosting exhibits featuring paper-mache and screen prints through Sept. 30 in the Adams Gallery of Moses-Provine Hall. Admission is free and open to the public, and after-hours access is available by appointment.

“Germinal,” a sculptural installation exhibit by Kara Gunter, is found on the first floor, while “Estamos Aqui,” an exhibit of prints by Latino artists curated by Brad Cushman, is located in the second-floor gallery.

Jill Parsons was named winner of the 2022 Student Juried Art Show sponsored by the Art Club at Ouachita Baptist University. Destiny Diaz won the first David Glaze Music Competition, held Thursday, April 28, at Ouachita Baptist University. Sponsored by the Division of Music in Ouachita’s School of Fine Arts, the competition featured performances from outstanding students in vocal and instrumental music performance programs at Ouachita.

Diaz is a senior instrumental music education major from Malvern, Ark. She received a $1,000 award for her winning performance on flute of “Allegretto Malincolico” by Francis Poulenc and “Fantasie, Op. 79” by Gabriel Fauré.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music presents the Percussion Ensemble in concert Monday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall. The Ouachita Baptist University Department of Theatre Arts will present its One Act Play Festival on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 9-10, at 7:30 p.m. in Verser Theater. The bi-annual event, which is free and open to the public, features six short plays directed by students in completion of end-of-semester projects in Ouachita’s play directing course. All plays will be presented both nights of the festival.

Matthew Murry, visiting assistant professor of theatre, said, “Students direct, perform, design, crew, assist and run the shows. For directing students, this festival provides the opportunity to enjoy their work alongside an audience.”

Ouachita Baptist University's Division of Music and Department of Theatre Arts will present the comic opera “H.M.S. Pinafore” by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan from Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 4-7, in Jones Performing Arts Center. Performances will take place Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with a Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m.

The production takes place in the 1920s aboard the Royal Navy ship H.M.S. Pinafore, anchored off of England’s south coast at Portsmouth. It tells the story of what happens when a captain's daughter is in love with a lower-class sailor, even though her father intends her to marry a lord.

Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts has adjusted its Spring 2021 events, including concerts, theatre productions and art galleries, to allow students to continue their performance education as well as provide safe viewing for audiences following COVID-19 guidelines from the Arkansas Department of Health and Ouachita’s Health Monitoring and Action Team.

Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will release an adapted version of the opera Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini in an online, pre-recorded format beginning Sunday, Jan. 31, which can be viewed for free at obu.edu/opera2021.

While typically a fall production, Ouachita’s opera had to be reimagined for both the cast and audiences due to COVID-19. Students and faculty began preparing in Spring 2020 and finished recording in late Fall 2020. Editing and post production then began and continued through January 2021.
