This book is a rewrite of Campus Telecommunications Systems: Managing Change, a book that was written by ACUTA in 1995. In the past decade, our industry has experienced a thousand-fold increase in data rates as we migrated from 10 megabit links (10 million bits per second) to 10 gigabit links (10 billion bits per second), we have seen the National Telecommunications Policy completely revamped; we have seen the combination of voice, data, and video onto one network; and we have seen many of our service providers merge into larger corporations able to offer more diverse services. When this book was …

Developing A Shared Vision: Strategic Planning As A Guide To Technology Funding

In December 2004 ACUTA and WTC sent a survey to 768 ACUTA primary members to determine what issues were important on campuses today and what issues respondents felt will be of importance in the next few years. Questions related to management, strategy, infrastructure, technology, organization, polity, and funding. One of the most interesting observations is that the current and five-year rankings are nearly identical- today's concerns are also your concerns for the future. Here are the highlights of our findings:
A cluster of five management issues were rated very close to the same importance. This cluster included developing a vision …

The purpose of this book is to provide a broadbased understanding of the rapidly changing environment of campus telecommunications. The anticipated audience for this material is the non-technical university administrator who may not have direct responsibility for telecommunications, but has a need to understand the general environment in which his telecommunications manager functions and the basic concepts of the technology. Five topic areas were selected that best cover the preponderance of issues. No attempt has been made to associate or closely coordinate materials from one chapter's subject to that of any other. Each chapter generally stands alone. In total, however, …

There are three characteristics of institutions of higher education that have a strong
impact on telecommunications:
. Campus Environment
. Multiple Service Populations
. Limited Budgets
Each characteristic translates into requirements for an effective telecommunication
system.
To Serve the Campus Environment
A campus is usually the first image associated with the word "college" or "university." Typically, institutions of higher education are housed in several buildings which may be fairly close together, or spread over some distance, perhaps reaching across a city or even a state.
To serve the campus user, a system must provide feature transparency, regardless of location. Small …

Back in the good old days, when the telephone business was simpler and Saturday night television was worth watching, I can remember Ted Knight the newsman (remember him on The Mary Tyler Moore Show?) looking off into some imagined horizon in the newsroom when asked how he happened to come to his current position. With head cocked upward and his hand clutching his right lapel, he'd start in his deepest, most pompous voice: “lt all started in a small, 5,000-watt radio station..." Around here it a!! started with a 12,000-line, decade-old Centrex system and a new hospital building going up …

Attached is a draft of the charter membership 'letter we discussed at the meeting in Chicago last week. PLEASE. I have no special "pride of authorship" in this type of thing, so I implore you to be ruthless in your criticism, additions, deletions, etc. We want to entice a good membership drive, not put laurels on my head. So, if you'll go over this, make comments and return to me just as soon as possible, I compile the comments, prepare the final copy and have it printed.
