Spring 2009 Women's History Celebration, March 16 to March 31. This year's celebration, "Sustaining Our Lives: Women Take the Lead to Save Our Planet" will focus on the role of women involved with environmental projects, activism, and scholarship. We would like to encourage students' environmental engagement by presenting what women have done in the past and what issues they might like to address in the present and the future. As always, we will provide an array of speakers, panels, films, and displays that will reflect the diversity of women's experiences locally, nationally, and internationally.

The School of Performing Arts is inviting Pam Chabora to come to the University of Maine to treat the campus population and the general public to a one-woman production that will bring Emily Dickinson's work to life. The play, called "The Belle of Amherst" will be performed by Chabora, a veteran stage actor and professor of theatre and dance at North Dakota State University. The two-act play highlights the events of Dickinson's life, sprinkled with selections of her poetry. The 2009 Festival will be held at the Maine Center for the Arts on February 14th and will feature matinee and evening performances. We intend to involve as many relevant campus groups and departments as possible to make this a true campus wide collaboration. As in past years this event will be free so that people of Maine have access to the cultural vitality of the University of Maine. In past years people have come from as far away as Presque Isle and Portland to enjoy this event.

I would like to invite Grégoire Chabot, a Franco American play-write, and his bilingual troupe to campus. Greg Chabot is originally from Waterville, Maine. He is one of the few Franco Americans who continues to write in French. His theater troupe, Da monde d'á côtá, has performed his plays in France, Quebec, and Louisiana. He also represents the entire New England Franco American community to the recently established Centre de la Francophonie des Amériques . He is an important voice of the Franco American community.

The 2007-08 women's team finished 4-5, fifth in the America East Championships and 11th in the ECAC Championships. With a strong core of hungry veteran swimmers, the team has a bright outlook for the 2008-09 campaign. The men's team showed imense potential in 2007-08, finishing 1-6 and fifth in the America East Championships and 24th in the ECAC Championships. The team looks to continue the progress they've made using their large freshman class to fuel their 2008-09 campaign.
