Like other forms of teaching and learning activities at the college, applied research activities have had to rapidly transform the way we work. For this session we will highlight two successful projects. The first is 2Unify; a Startup company founded by students graduates from McMaster university, using AI and machine vision to bring to market an automated guitar tuning stand.

The second is Petal; a Startup company that makes a zero-odor germ freezing waste bin.

We will also touch on how at CAMDT (Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Design Technologies) we adopted new processes and technology to allow applied research …

Conducting Focus Groups In A Virtual Environment: A Review Of Best Practices In Methodology (Presentation), Rosanne Brown, Shazia Akhtar, Laura Edge

In this session, we will analyze the focus group methodology and outline best practices for data collection in a virtual context. Considerations around group dynamics, visual cues, and bias will be discussed using a comparative approach of in-person and virtual focus groups. In addition to adapting focus group practices and procedures from in-person to online, there are new aspects to take into account; video-conferencing tools and technological considerations, including issues with connectivity, distractions and privacy concerns are factors that need to be accounted for when conducting focus groups virtually.
