Although both the military and fraternities have been theorized to be characterized by
norms and attitudes that serve to legitimize violence against women, no previous work has
examined the potential similarity and differences in rape-supportive beliefs of these 2
environments or the people drawn to them. Further, the belief systems of women within
these organizations have received little attention. As such, the current study sought to serve
as an initial exploration of the rape-supportive belief systems of people drawn to these

Understanding The Meaning-Making Processes Of Hispanic College Students In Their Spiritual And Religious Development., Roland Nunez, John D. Foubert

This study used narrative inquiry to understand what spirituality
and religiosity meant to Hispanic students attending a large,
Midwestern university in the United States. The study consisted
of interviews with 10 Hispanic students who discussed their
spiritual and religious beliefs from childhood through college.
Findings supported current literature that spirituality increases
and religiosity decreases during college. However, after an
initial decline in religiosity during the first year of college,
participants reported a noteworthy increase shortly after
college began. Secondly, students’ spiritual and religious beliefs
were closely tied to their family, supporting research on familial
centrality in Hispanic culture.

Use of pornography is common among adolescents and young adults, with most men and a growing number of women viewing regularly. A vast body of research suggests pornography use is associated with multiple attitudinal and behavioral variables. One of those associations, for both men and women, is higher pornography use is correlated with a lower likelihood of intervening to prevent sexual assault. The present study explored how motives for viewing pornography related to male (n = 139) and female (n = 290) college students’ willingness and efficacy to intervene to help prevent a sexual assault from occurring. Student Engagement In Extracurricular Activities And Academic Performance: Exploring Gender Differences, Avi Zacherman, John D. Foubert

The effects of time spent in extracurricular activities on academic performance was tested. A curvilinear relationship between hours per week spent involved in extracurricular activities and grade point average was discovered such that a low amount of extracurricular involvement was beneficial to grades, while a high amount can potentially hurt academic performance in college students. Important gender differences were present such that very high involvement was particularly detrimental to men’s academic performance.

Effects Of Gender And Facebook Use On The Development Of Mature Interpersonal Relationships, John D. Foubert, Ryan C. Masin

This study analyzed the effects of gender and the intensity of Facebook use on college students’ development of mature interpersonal relationships at a large Midwestern University. Small, significant negative relationships between the development of mature interpersonal relationships and Facebook use intensity existed, with slightly more negative correlations found when only peer relationships were considered. A two-way ANOVA revealed significant effects of both gender and Facebook use intensity on the development of mature interpersonal relationships.
