Handbooks, Policies, And Power: Discursive Language And Lgbtqia+ Representation In Christian University Handbooks, Kaitlin Merlino
Honors Projects and Presentations: Undergraduate
For many years, tensions have existed between Christianity and the LGBTQ community, most apparent in contexts such as politics and education. One site of conflict is within the realm of Christian higher education, specifically in regards to campus-wide regulation of same-sex behaviors. This research examines the language in sexuality-based rules as communicated in four Christian universities' handbooks. Bakhtin & Holquist (1981) demonstrate the innate tension between dialogue and the social context within which it is understood. Therefore, since language is not neutral, the words creating these rules are in themselves a site of tension for the university, its contributors, its …
Religious Orientation And Coping In Third Culture Kids, Kayla Zerbe
Religious Orientation And Coping In Third Culture Kids, Kayla Zerbe
Honors Projects and Presentations: Undergraduate
This study examines the correlation between religious orientation and religious coping in Third Culture Kids (TCKs). Young adult TCKs often struggle with their identity, mental health, and cultural adjustment during the reentry process. Despite the unique struggles TCKs experience, very little research has been done on this population. Religion may play a role in the reentry process as support, challenge, or way of coping. The present study examines religion in TCKs through the lens of motivation, using the Religious Orientation Scale (ROS), which measures intrinsic and extrinsic religious orientation, and the Brief RCOPE, which measures positive and negative religious coping. …

Christianity, Feminism, And Identity Development In Christian Higher Education, Kaitlin Merlino
Christianity, Feminism, And Identity Development In Christian Higher Education, Kaitlin Merlino
Communication Student Scholarship
Identity formation acts as an important part of human development. At the same time, some difficulty occurs when a person attempts to hold two identities that seemingly contradict. For those that identify as both feminists and Christians, this dilemma creates difficulties. As these two identity camps have been on opposing ends of a variety of issues for years, some may even feel unable to claim both of these labels simultaneously. At the same time, some can hold the values of each even as they reject the identity labels. The context of higher education provides students with an environment where they …

The Impact Of Perinatal Palliative Care Simulation On Undergraduate Nursing Students, Erin Anderson
The Impact Of Perinatal Palliative Care Simulation On Undergraduate Nursing Students, Erin Anderson
Nursing (graduate) Student Scholarship
Background: Nurses who have limited exposure to perinatal palliative care often avoid interactions with patients, limiting the quality of care provided. Undergraduate nursing students are often not afforded opportunities for experiencing perinatal palliative care during direct patient care clinicals. Simulation may provide an opportunity for students to have these experiences.
Methods: A review of the literature was conducted resulting in six articles addressing the evidence-based education question, do undergraduate nursing students report feeling more prepared to provided perinatal palliative care to patient and families after receiving didactic instruction along with simulation-based learning experiences, compared with nursing students who receive …
The Effect Of Perioperative Education In Undergraduate Nursing, Elizabeth Biddle-Zabawa
The Effect Of Perioperative Education In Undergraduate Nursing, Elizabeth Biddle-Zabawa
Nursing (graduate) Student Scholarship
Educational institutions have modified their curriculum and as a result perioperative education in undergraduate nursing programs has decreased to where it is nonexistent in some institutions (Byrne, Root, & Culbertson, 2016). The decrease of perioperative education in nursing programs has led to a lack of new graduate nurses choosing to work in the perioperative setting and creating a nursing shortage (Castelluccio, 2011). The purpose of this evidence-synthesizing capstone project was to explore and determine how best practices to incorporate perioperative concepts into undergraduate nursing education curricula influence new graduate employment in perioperative nursing.
Methods: A total of 12 articles fit …

The Impact Of Faculty Growth Mindset On Student Mindset And Learning Engagement, Emma G. Cartisano
HIED Student Scholarship
Growth mindset is the belief that general intellectual ability is malleable and can be developed. This thesis describes the presence and cultivation of growth mindset in the academic experiences of six undergraduate students in the social sciences at a medium-sized, liberal arts and sciences college. Individual interviews were analyzed using narrative inquiry to explore the impact of instructor philosophy and pedagogy on student mindset and learning engagement. Research findings highlight that instructor embodiment of growth mindset, including relationality, modeling, and constructive delivery of feedback, as well as assignment design, were instrumental. Participants did not share a common definition of growth …

English Learners’ Perspectives Of Teaching Methodologies In Community College Eap Classes, Lisa Walker
English Learners’ Perspectives Of Teaching Methodologies In Community College Eap Classes, Lisa Walker
Graduate Education Student Scholarship
Community colleges provide a popular pathway for many English Language Learners (ELLs). Unfortunately, many of them struggle to pass through the multiple levels of non-credit bearing developmental course sequences in order to improve their academic use of English and thrive in post-secondary work. A qualitative look at perspectives of these English Learners on methodology may provide insight to ways that teachers could modify instruction to meet the diverse needs of students within community college English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses. Findings suggest that more explicit teaching about language acquisition and the research-based methodologies that support it along with more consistent …
