Fitness and musculoskeletal injuries are a major health concern among United States law enforcement personnel. The objectives of this study were twofold: 1) to compare the effects of wearing work gear and not wearing work gear during job related specific activities; and 2) identify the negative effects of the required work equipment on law officials and exploring methods to decrease the negative effects. This literature review evaluates how physical activity can improve student academic performance. Articles from the last decade provide strong evidence students, given access to physical activity, show improved academic performance. Physical activity improves the brain's functioning and different kinds of physical activity impact cognitive performance. Researchers acknowledged a strong correlation between physical activity and the development of overall wellness and academic confidence. Research also shows students with learning and cognitive disabilities benefit academically and behaviorally from physical activity. Physical activity is an essential element of the development of children and adolescents.

A Wellness Approach To Investigating Student Veterans’ Career Goals, Thomas C. Seguin, Abby L. Bjornsen-Ramig, Ashley J. Blount, Danae M. Dinkel

A qualitative methodology was utilized to assess the wellness factors student Veterans (N = 10) perceived as influential to their decision to separate from the military and choice of intended career path. Participants included prior enlisted student Veterans pursuing undergraduate degrees at a mid-sized Midwestern university. Interview transcripts were coded according to the Indivisible Self Model of Wellness (IS-Wel; Myers & Sweeney, 2004) and analyzed phenomenologically. Participants referenced Control and Self-Worth as motivators for separation from military service; Work and Thinking were the main themes regarding choice of future profession. The Islamic Foundation of Lincoln is a growing population within Lincoln including many different racial backgrounds, ethnic identities, and languages. Due to these various backgrounds communication may impair the education of families as well as their attitudes and behaviors. Although there are programs developed for many other minority groups, the Muslim (population comprising the Islamic Foundation of Lincoln) population does not have any data obtained from the community in terms of nutrition and physical activity behaviors, attitudes, and knowledge. The first time that I really committed myself to getting in shape and working out was freshman year at Wheaton Warrenville South. Before then my weight was not the best nor my health. But spending about two hours every day after school for two months at the gym really got me to change. That was the first time I had ever committed myself to going to the gym consistently. I lost weight, I gained some muscle and was certainly in better shape than before. I can honestly say that it felt great.

For most of my life, I have done little to nothing to improve my level of holistic wellness. I did sports, but never very intensely. After freshman year, which is when I was at my heaviest weight, I became more focused on my health and how it was negatively affecting my self-confidence. That summer, I started going on bike rides. But cardio alone is in no way enough to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Background: The consistently rising obesity rate in college student population illustrates the need for organized and effective interventions. The purposes of this study were to evaluate an eight-week fitness program implemented at university student recreation center using mixed-methods along the reach, effectiveness, and implementation dimensions of the RE-AIM framework for evaluating health-promotion programs and to illustrate how qualitative data can be used to enhance the capabilities of the RE-AIM framework to evaluate such programs via providing recommendations to improve the intervention not possible with just a quantitative RE-AIM evaluation.
